The book was interesting. I don't know if i like how it ended or not. But the book almost always kept me intrigued and interested.
The book had a lot to live up to (expectation-wise). I grew up watching the franchise and I finally decided to jump into reading the book. It was worth every second. Katniss is much more enjoyable in the book then in the movie. It was easy to root for her. You get to know Katniss better in the book. The relationship between Peeta and Katniss was also enjoyable to watch unfold. Even if Katniss was too dense to realize that Peeta truly does have feelings for her. I would most definitely recommend.
This was actually better than I expected it to be honestly. The movie did not do it justice
I read it when I was 12 but, at this time, I didn't really like it. But, like a lot of books, I didn't like them when I was young. I gave it another try when I was older and in english. What a surprise when I discovered I really like it ! Actually, the writing was really fluid so it was pretty difficult to put down the book.Even though I remember the whole plot, I held my breath for some time ! At first I didn't like Katniss, her character was a bit of a cliché. But, after some chapters, i begin to like her but i still like Peeta the most ahaha can't wait to read the next one
Nice book. I like the colorful Capitol. Also the book characters fighting for freedom, and their unity in the fight for it, and friendship. Katniss wants to survive the hunger games at all costs, and she does everything to make it happen. I was touched by the moment when there was nothing to eat in District 12, and Katniss and her Family had to eat flower salad. Here my eyes filled with tears. I m a fan of the movies, and personally I prefer the movies. But each who wants to watch the movie, should read the Book. I watching movies once a month as a fan. Its cool
Rating: 3.7 leaves out of 5Characters: 3/5 Cover:2/5Story: 4.75/5Writing: 5/5Genre: Dystopian/Fantasy/Scifi/RomanceType: AudiobookWorth?: YeahHated Disliked Meh It Was Okay Liked LovedBooks came out when I was a teen but didn't take the time to read them. Loved the movies when they came out but now finally getting to them.I am glad the movie followed the book pretty close, from what I could remember, but I haven't seen them in a while. Katniss did annoy me a bit but that wasn't much. Really enjoyed it either way!
One of the absolute best dystopian novels and an absolute cultural phenomenon and a classic
It was a real effort to get myself to read this. First I tried watching the spoof—couldn't do it. Then I tried the movie while multitasking—couldn't get into it. The idea is so appalling and thus didn't interest me in the slightest. But finally, I found the book for sale dirt cheap at the local library and knew this was the only way I'd make myself get through it. Here are my thoughts.
The first half of the book was surprisingly slow. Knowing that the horrible Hunger Games were coming, the intro seemed to drag a bit. So I was almost looking forward to it. Perhaps that was the plan? I had a general idea of the ending of the games—and thought I was going to be disappointed at one point—but the ending was done well. It paid off very well in my opinion.
I don't recall any profanity.
Obviously, there's violence. Plenty mentions of blood and types of wounds. More than necessary, but it doesn't linger on these events for long unless it's for trying to stop the bleeding or the like.
Would I read the next one?
I'm not eager to, but I'm curious. I probably will at some point.
this was my first time ever reading this book and i had so much fun!!!! it was better than i expected and i cant wait to continue. also im team peeta, at least for now
If I hadn't expected something like Harry Potter, I'd have given this a 3. I overestimated this book. It has a linear adventure plot, with a not-so-intriguing world-building. And it turned out to be one-dimensional, probably because it was written in the first person. Wouldn't it be incredibly difficult to built a world, in a book written in first person?
And, the plotline seemed to change to suit the interests of the main characters. The ending was obvious from the beginning. It's more of a children's book than YA. I don't understand the hype.
Audiobook narration: 5/5 The best narration ever!
Only reading this because of the Tumblr posts I keep seeing about how great this series is and how Peeta and Gale represent peace and violence for Katniss, and it's less a love triangle, more of her choosing one way of life over another.
I hear you, but then why the fuck was 50% of this book focussed on the love triangle?!
But still, I enjoyed this more than book one (probably because 2nd movie was my favourite). The games part was the most fascinating. I liked how the alliance formed by keeping the two idiots unaware of it all. You could clearly see the others specifically protecting Peeta and Katniss at every step of the way.
— audiobook notes (spoilers galore) —
• Wait wait! Gale was just saying that Hazel can't drag three kids through the woods in winter while they're on the run, but then totally changes tone when Katniss mentions the uprising. He wants an uprising in District 12 too. Like dude? Moron? What's wrong with that brain of yours? You think your family would survive the uprising but not the woods?!
• Shut up, Katniss. Please just shut up. Fuck Gale. Fuck you.
• Wow the marriage part was more prominent in the book than the movie. Or I selectively forgot about it.
• Peeta is a saint. None of you deserve him.
• WTF Katniss. Why were you crying about Gale so much when you're HUGGING PEETA TO SLEEP?! WTF is your damage, girl???
• Why are the games only in the last 20% of the book?!
• Last 20% was more enjoyable than the beginning 50% with Gale this, Gale that.
• Finnick!! Too bad you'll die in the next one. You're the second character I can tolerate without cringing.
I cannot reread this series enough. I freaking ADORE this series.
It's well written, the characters are great, the plot is great and exciting. Perfect for teen readers (and adults :p)
I swear to God. I think I am obsessed again with The Hunger Games xD.
So for the characters we have:
Katniss: My girl! So tough. She has been through a lot and she is amazing #GirlPower
Peeta: MY FAVOURITE DUDE EVER! He's a precious bean. I love him with every fiber in my body.
Gale: Never liked him, sorry. Whiny dude.
Haymitch: Hilarious, love him.
Effie: Beautiful person, even though she isn't the best in the first book. She'll grow so much.
Prim: love the little Duckling <3
4.5 stars, still holds up in 2021.
This reading, I listened to the re-recording of the audiobook by Tatiana Maslany which was read beautifully. She did sigh a little too much on the beginning which was a little jarring and distracting, but overall the performance was fantastic.
I wanted to reread the series in preparation to read the prequel (which i just found out about!) and figured it's a good time to get my partner to read the books which meant a lot to me. Thankfully he agreed to listen along.
Suzanne is such a talented author and i think i only appreciate this book more after reading the overlander series for the first time last year and can recognise the similar themes and the ways she's grown her voice.
I'm so drawn in to the characters and world in this story and genuinely care so much about what happens to them, even feeling attached to the minor characters. generally, I'm not one for romance or mushy feelings but I'm so invested in the tangled up relationship between Katniss and Peeta and the complexity of her feelings and the heart break when he realises she doesn't necessarily feel the same way. It can so easily be played off as ‘poor boy getting cucked by bitchy girl' but i think Suzanne handles this very delicately and with subtlety that feels very genuine. Even though it's a dystopian YA, everything just feels so real.
