Yeah, this is a good short story right here. It was lovely to be back in Westeros for the first time in years. I even started watching the show again regardless of the inevitable disappointment.

Dunk the lunk, thick as a castle wall
Martin has a way to captivate one's attention till the end. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Une nouvelle plaisante à lire dans l'univers de Game of Thrones, mais se déroulant une centaine d'années avant les événements des romans et de la série. C'est agréable à lire et cela permet de découvrir plus en profondeur certains événements et certaines personnalités de cet univers.
A great little novella, complimented greatly by the artwork. A nice little addition to the GOT world.
Het hele Song of Ice and Fire tot nog toe is erdoor gejaagd, en elke dag een Culture-boek lezen, da's gelijk een beetje respectloos. Dus dacht ik: tijd om eens Tales of Dunk and Egg te lezen, de Song of Ice and Fire prequels-enfin-tussenquels-min-of-meer.
Negentig jaar vóór A Game of Thrones, in Westeros. Daeron de Goede (Daeron II Targaryen) is 25 jaar koning.
Dunk is de schildknaap van Ser Arlan of Pennytree, een ridder zonder meester (“hedge knight” klinkt zoveel mooier en poëtischer, vind ik). Dunk is een (zeer grote) jongen van Fleabottom (de sloppenwijk van King's Landing). Arlan sterft, maar riddert Dunk net voor zijn dood. Op weg naar het toernooi van Ashford komt Dunk (ondertussen Ser Duncan) een kale staljongen tegen, Egg, die absoluut zijn schildknaap wil zijn.
Dunk ziet dat niet zitten, maar uiteindelijk wurmt Egg zich een weg in Dunk's dienst, en ook wel in zijn hart.
En dan is er een uit de hand gelopen incident met Prins Aerion Targaryen (kleinzoon van Daeron en de schlechte schlechterik van dienst), en blijkt Egg de jongere broer van Aerion te zijn. De jongen die later koning Aegon V zal zijn, Aegon the Unlikely, de vierde zoon van Maekar, die ook al de vierde zoon van Daeron was – en de jongere broer trouwens van Maester Aemon van de Night's Watch.
Het toernooi wordt een impromptu gerechtelijk toernooi, wegens lèse-majesté van Dunk. Met meer dan bijzonder verregaande gevolgen voor de hele geschiedenis van Westeros.
Er is ook een graphic novel van in zes delen, maar ik heb het gelezen als een para-legaal gedownload ebook, en het rare van de zaak: ik moet dit een eeuw geleden ook al gelezen hebben, en er niets van onthouden hebben. De anthologie waarin dit verscheen, Legends: Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy uit 1998, staat in mijn bibliotheek en heb ik bijzonder graag gelezen. Ik herinner me dat ik vooral uitkeek naar de verhalen van Pratchett, Stephen King en Ursula K. Le Guin, ‘t moet zijn dat het verhaal van George R.R. Martin vijftien jaar geleden weinig of geen indruk nagelaten heeft.
Na (manifest dus her-)lezing vond ik: een fijn verhaal, met sympathieke personages, veel vaart en verrassend veel diepgang, en terloops machtig interessant voor wie meer dan een vluchtige interesse heeft in (de geschiedenis van) Westeros en aanverwanten.
Bijzonder blij dat Martin zegt dat hij er een hele reeks van plant te schrijven.
This was a weird one to read. I've loved all of Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series, so this story, set in the same universe, seemed like a natural fit. And it was a good story, definitely, but it didn't have the same feel as the Song, aside from the ending. And, with it set a century before the other books, all of the house alignments are different, and the political landscape is radically different as well.
Taken on its own, however, the tale of Dunk the Lunk from Flea Bottom, and how he became Ser Duncan the Tall, is an interesting if not overly remarkable tale told by one of the masters of modern fantasy.
While I loved the novella by itself, I think that the medium really did something a little extra for the story. George R.R. Martin is one of my favorite writers, not just for his Song of Ice and Fire but because he has a way of using words and making me care, making me feel emotional about the characters. Dunk and Egg are equally as likable and touching as many of his other characters. But I also love the simple tale of a tall boy wanting to become a knight - simply because he is living and breathing all the values knights should have...
A lovely story, a wonderful adventure into Westeros 100 years before A Game of Thrones, and one of my favorite graphic novels ever. For a full review (with some pictures), head over to the SFF Book Review
