I'm very nostalgic for this series, which probably colors my opinion of it a bit, but uh...even after 20+ years this book holds up. The Golem's Eye is a bit more cluttered than the Amulet of Samarkand, but it's still just as much fun, just as hilariously funny as the first book.
I can't recommend this series enough – for people of any age, honestly. If you like sarcastic, funny narrators, than you'll like Bartimaeus.
I really really enjoyed the second book!
The humour is dry and well balanced. The additional characters added in to expand the plot kept things fresh and Kitty was a great focus point.
I feel like the plot is fairly well wrapped up, so I???m curious to see what book three has in store for me.
It may be classified as YA (Young Adult) but it rarely feels like that as you're reading. I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy so much that I quickly bought books 2 and 3. It just takes me a while to get around to every book I want to read. Am I right? Anyway, this book continues the saga of the young magician Nathaniel (who seems to be getting a little too caught up in the trappings of power), the djinni he calls upon to serve him, Bartimaeus (as wise-cracking as ever), and young Kitty Jones who's part of a small resistance movement against the disdainful, untrustworthy magicians that run the government. And there's some other conspiracy afoot which gets more and more dangerous. It's really interesting to follow the trajectories of Nathaniel and Kitty. But Bartimaeus has been around for centuries, so I doubt he's going to change (which is a good thing).
I enjoy how I can't figure out who to root for. Each character has their good sides and bad sides, though Kitty is probably the best of the bunch!
Darker than the last one (not detrimental), but suffers from being the ‘one-in-the-middle'. Still an excellent read.
