The Golden State ended up being a golden chore for me to read, ymmv. I will admit it picked up in the end when we were spending time with Alice but this truly is a novel about nothing. It's just the ins and outs of long days with a toddler. It does nail a young mother's emotions and feelings toward motherhood. It's been a couple of decades for me and I don't miss it myself. Honey was especially accident prone.
I think my problem lie in my lack of sympathy for Daphne. Plenty of women are raising kids on their own, and doing it without financial safety nets, cushy jobs and properties left to them by relatives. Oh, boo hoo, she didn't finish her PhD. I know we meet her at a point in her life where her life plan has been derailed, and we had to watch her figure it out. It troubled me how incredibly untroubled the husband was about the situation.
Read for TOB2019 and would have DNF'd otherwise.
