3.5 really. It took me so long to finish this book (mostly my fault) but I'm glad I hung onto it. Faye is an excellent writer and a dab hand at period lexicon, that's for sure. Her complex use of language is one of the best things about this book and simultaneously one of the reasons it wasn't always the first book I picked out of a line up. Warning: the plot is appropriately gruesome for 1845 NYC, and definitely contributed to my readability factor. That being said, the mystery was well constructed and the protagonist was GREAT. I would happily share a French cream with Timothy Wilde any day. Thanks for the rec Ken!
