Wow, so good.
I was recommended this one a few months back and thought I would give it a try. I picked it up, not even reading the synopsis– in fact I thought it was going to be a graphic novel! (FYI, it isn't)
To start, this book has great rep and talks a bit about identity and trying to figure out what/who you are. I will let other people comment more on this, since as a white woman I don't think my words here are important. So, go read some awesome POC reviews on this book!
The inclusion of the zines Malú made are pretty rad. Hopefully they will encourage people to make their own zines! Malú is also an amazing character –as well as those cool side characters! The characters all felt different and distinct. I totally could have read more dialogue just between the band.
The whole Punk concept is fun and it was interesting to see how Malú's thoughts on punk changed or became more flexible as the book continued on. Punk should really be the signature music on middle and high school students! Rebel! Fight Against the Man! ^_^
This is a cute, fun book dealing with identity. I will definitely be recommending this to... pretty much everyone who likes contemporary reads.
