What a thoroughly depressing book - there's nothing pleasant about this. The protagonist is a complete arse who treats people like dirt, and his actions after the (spoiler) make him irredeemable.
I really need to find some cheerier books to read this year...
This is a difficult one to rate. On the one hand the writing is quite good and the plot is intriguing enough, however none of the characters are likeable for all sorts of reasons. The book reminds the reader why does a person seek an affair first of all (at the core of it) and also gives some food for thought for anyone considering whether to start one.
- disclaimer: this is the first of Greene's books that I've read, so I can't compare it to his other works.
- apparently the most autobiographical of his works.
- the characters seemed one-dimensional, or at least so intensely inhabited by a single burning emotion or cause that they seemed that way.
- The exploration of the psychology of jealousy, love, betrayal, etc was very enjoyable, and could be the the primary draw of this book.
