Fun characters and setting, messy plot. At least 150 pages longer than it needed to be. I'm excited to read the next one tho; I hope it'll focus more on...the actual Diviners and their abilities
This book was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I loved it soooo much. Personally, I love supernatural related stuff so this book to me is a must, completely!
The plot of this book happens in the twenties in New York and it talks about a small group of people that have supernatural gifts and then there's this killer in town that is murdering people and leaving supernatural marks on their bodies like pentagrams.
I really really loved it, Libba Brays writting is so amazing that you get attached to the book since the very beginning... I was like in the third paragraph and I was already loving it a lot!
The characters are funny and some of them, I'd say, even intriguing but in a good way. Also, it can get a little scary at some point which I found awesome because few books can make me feel a little scared while reading spooky things. The only kind of negative thing I have to say is that I wished it had happened a little faster, because the action is a bit slow and personally I like a little action too.
In conclusion, I'm very glad I gave this book a try and it was worth every time that I “wasted” reading it!!
oh fuck this was so good but so scary!!!! i didn't know it was going to be so scary!!!! ahh!!!
I understand that some people like scary things??? but it just kind of gives me a stomachache. But I loved all the characters and the mystery and the historical detail so much that I stuck it out through the GENUINE TERROR.
the audiobook is phenomenal too, great voices for all the characters. Highly recommended for your next 15-hour drive.
I also love the diversity, taking full advantage of the 1920s NYC setting–not just white flappers but also the Harlem Renaissance, and how those worlds do and don't interact. And also ghosts ahhhh
Also for me I thought the use of 20s slang was like, just enough, but not so much to be annoying. The cat's particulars!
Shelving this as ‘DNF'. I just can't stand the main character and the writing isn't for me.
( I'm tired of reading books that are so obviously part of series frown I'm just not willing to invest) reminded me of the TV series carnival. set a little earlier, before the depression. roaring twenties New York + flappers and drinking + occult religion and murder. it would make a fine movie/TV series of it's own. main character is sympathetic and flawed, the setting atmospheric and engaging. a little ya because of the ages of main POV characters, but not obnoxiously so. would recommend on the strength of being a decent paranormal thriller.
