The Darkest Legacy

Erin and I have buddy read book 2, book 3 and now book 4 of The Darkest Minds series and I have enjoyed buddy reading with her so much. Out of the 3 books we've read we both really enjoyed 2 of them unfortunately this last book was not good.

I normally do spoiler free reviews but this review is going to be spoilery so if you haven't read this book or any of them really and you plan to read them I would say skip my review for now and maybe come back to it later. Also sorry but I have a feeling this is going to be a rant review and will probably be all over the place and make no sense whatsoever.

Like with the previous books we read 4 chapters a day and then talked about our thoughts on those chapters. It started out with a bang. I was told by several people that this book wasn't as good as the others. After the first 4 chapters I was actually really enjoying. Like it immediately jumped into the action. I was also loving having Suzume's (Zu) perspective.

Things started to slow down a bit after that and I felt like we were moving backwards. Like we were right back where we started which was extremely annoying. Honestly the more I read of this book the more frustrated and annoyed I got with everything about it.

Ok now to talk about all the specific things that bothered me. First all of the characters seem to have completely different personalities. The things they did just didn't seem like the characters we got to know in the first three books. It didn't seem like I was reading about the same characters at all. The only original character that was part of the entire story was Zu. The others made appearances here and there some more than other which I didn't like. I just wanted the gang back together.

Also Clancy was somewhat back in this book and if you've read any of my other reviews you know I was 100% over him in book 2 and honestly he doesn't really play a big part and I think he could have been written out completely. Can you tell I really hate this character?

The communication between characters in the beginning is pretty much non existent which would end up being the sole reason that something bad happened and again so freaking annoyed.

I feel like I am rambling so much and there's so much I want to say but this is already super long so I am going to try to wrap it up.

So pretty much it felt like we were right back where we started. The characters seemed like they had a personality change. The only character that acted like herself was Vida which was actually a plus. There was a lack of communication for a huge chunk of the book. It felt like we were going in circles and getting nowhere. The plot for this book was to find Ruby and clear Zu's name, both of which was resolved rather quickly in the final 4 chapters. There were a few lose ends and we are left with an open ending which I personally hate. The more I read this book the more and more I was over it. Honestly if I wasn't buddy reading this with Erin I probably would have DNFed it.

Yeah so I'm pretty sure I repeated myself but basically everything annoyed and frustrated me. There was a few things that I did like. I liked having Zu's POV. I liked that Vida was still herself and I loved the romance between Zu and Roman. I thought the romance was just so cute and poor Zu deserved to be happy.

Y'all know how much I love romance and how I latch onto it so it pains me to say that not even the romance could not make me love this book.
