The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

3 stars. I would actually really like to read this book again sometime, it was very interesting and kept me turning the page. Though the characters didn't catch my attention a whole lot (except for Gavriel), the plot kept me plenty entertained.

Deadly vampires trying to kill you, on the run with your ex and a vampire you should consider marrying, vampire town you don't want to be trapped in.... What an interesting mixture.

Though I did enjoy it very much, the ending and a few other things were left unexplained and I didn't really feel like it was a complete ending to the novel. Despite that, I like it a lot.

3.5 because there were parts of this that were a slog to get through. And it was a little weird. But then also I ate this tf up...! Really good world building and such an interesting story love u Holly Black they can never make me hate u

Tana wakes up with a bunch of dead bodies. In this book vampires are real and they get corralled into walled towns called “coldtowns”. Her ex boyfriend at the party was bitten and has not turned yet. She decides to go with him to coldtown in case he does turn. On the way they pick up another crazy vampire and two wannabe vampires. Tana tries to keep Adian from turning and keeping Gavriel from being crazier although she is attracted to him.

The story is good although sometimes seems a bit vague in parts. I liked the relationships in the story although why she cares about Aiden is unclear.

I did like the ending though.

Vampires have been romanticized for years. The alluring suitors that will make your darkest dreams come true. Distant stories that soon became a reality when the first outbreak occurred. A single bite can infect you, turn you cold and give a thirst for blood. And a single drop of blood once you're infected can turn you into a full-fledged vampire. In an attempt to keep the vampires contained, Coldtowns were created to seal them behind walls. But monsters are never easy to trap. Tana wakes up from a party to find the house littered with corpses and her ex-boyfriend infected by a vampire. She starts a desperate race to reach a Coldtown. A vampire is willing to help them reach it, but will they make it in time before they cave into their blood cravings?

This was a dark and haunting tale, filled with blood and betrayal. Written in a style that blends past and present, the story unfolds piece by piece. It reveals broken and flawed characters, each with their own burdens from a tormented past. As the plot progresses, they must face their fears in an attempt to overcome the chains holding them back. It's a difficult and violent road, one that refused to let me leave.

The only downfall to The Coldest Girl in Coldtown was the romance. I'm not one for romance in books, but if it is justified then I roll with it. I understand it's a high selling point, and most readers enjoy it. But the romance in this book felt random. It seemed to be an afterthought added in a later draft once the story was completed. There was no build-up, not even an instant connection, it was sort of just...there.

Despite the slip up with romance, Holly Black never fails to put her characters through hell and back to push them forward. It makes the journey they undertake all the more rewarding, or heartbreaking depending on how it goes. This isn't a book for those who like a quick light read. Taking on this experience is going to require a taste for horror.

I wish I liked this more. I was really expecting too, especially after hearing the beginning which I loved the opening chapter. But honestly for me this book just seemed plotless and rambling.

It's just over 12hrs on Audiobook, (I do got to stop and say Christine Eakin who did the reading was great with voices, and I enjoyed the creepy music added in here and there as well) and getting to the last hour and half or so I still wasn't really sure where this book was going. I kept glancing at the time wondering how this book was going to get wrapped up when nothing really happened in the first 10hrs.

The time is eaten up mainly by flashbacks about Tanna's childhood which I found mostly boring and then information about the history of Coldtowns. Which honestly I did like the Coldtown info and found the world Holly Black created to be really interesting. I also liked the personalities of both Tanna and Gavriel (and even the small bursts of supporting characters like Aiden, Valentina, and Jameson). So all of that made the book enjoyable for me.

I just really wish there was more of a plot! Also the ending was left super open. Some may like that but it mostly annoyed me. Which is a shame because a good ending will usually make a book for me.

This book is great! Holly Black is a talented writer and this clearly shows. My one complaint is that I was a bit confused by the pacing as well as the semi-insta-love that was in the book. Overall, very good, very engaging, and very riveting.

Eh, let's say 2.5 stars. This was fine. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. It felt like a goth teen wrote a vampire book. At the end there's all the acknowledgements of all the vampire books Black read growing up, and that added to the feeling of it being teen-y; here's all these vampirey things I've read about! Together! I finished it though, so it wasn't awful. But. Meh.

I regret not reading this earlier, but I'm so glad I finally read it because this was absolutely brilliant.

The characters are so absolutely amazing. Tana is a strong character who is still worried and freaking out about her situation. Gavriel is like my favorite character haha. He is so cool, but so messed up. Aiden, even though not my favorite, was written well (and perhaps dressed to impress my teenage self). There was so many different characters and lives in play, it was really interesting to read.

The writing should be talked about as well. Every other chapter is a flashback or mention to something else going on in the story. While I was expecting that I wasn't going to enjoy these chapters or find them distracting from the main story, I enjoyed them. True, I didn't look forward to these chapters, but they shined a light on the ongoing story, giving the reader additional information to connect to characters or understand more about the setting.

This book is gripping and fast-paced, most of the time. I absolutely enjoyed this book and will be reading more of the this author in the future.

Bloody, dark, creepy- typical Holly Black.

This book was incredible. It was an amazing work of horror, and amazing love story, and one of the best depictions of a powerful female lead I have ever read. The main character is exactly the kind you want young girls to read and be inspired by. No, not because she is perfect by any realm. It is because she is real, raw, strong, brave, and caring. She dares to struggle with the hard choices, instead of letting herself see things as black and white.
Holly Black's writing style is flawless. I was captivated from word one through to the end. I was also really impressed by how I could never predict it. There were times I had guesses and it came out totally different, and other times I couldn't even fathom how the book could go next. Incredible. This will easily be one of the best books I've read this year. I can also assure you future readers, this book has an amazing ending. It is well worth the read. If you enjoy vampire stories you will enjoy this one, and if you've never liked one before in the past, this will be the one that will metaphorically bite you and bring you over.

Such a good book. I hope that there is a sequel. I like the way it ended but I want to know what happens with Tana.

This book is decent, but I wanted it to be more after reading so much hype. It had potential–the world here was a bit unique, despite being yet another vampire book. But the characters didn't ring true. No one reacts as they should, and too much of the plot hangs on strange decisions characters make that aren't ever really explained.

All that aside, it is a fun, quick read, especially if you already love YA and vampire lore. Just don't go into it looking for something earth-shattering.

What made me think I would like this? It makes no attempt to hide the fact that it's a vampire book (which I simply cannot get behind) and yet I cheerfully picked it up off the shelf. I think it was the stunning cover.

I will say this: Holly Black has a way with words. For all its faults, this book is certainly well written. Its faults, though, are many. I found the main character utterly unlikable which is a huge strike against any book for me. The book's setting was interesting and vivid at first but it started to fade. I understood the world as Black built it but I just didn't like it. If there are sequels to this (it seemed like there might be) I'm not sure I will take the time to read them.

Even from the beginning, that was the problem. People liked pretty things. People even liked pretty things that wanted to kill and eat them.

I will start by saying that I was drawn in by both the summary of the book and the cover.

I was very intrigued by the setting, it seemed a refreshing take on the vampire universe. The idea of the vampires co-existing with humans through these “coldtowns” was a nice touch. I've had some problems with the logistics of it all, but I decided to just go along with it.

The beginning was pretty shaky. I wasn't very fond of what went down before they reached the Coldtown. Tana's character wasn't particularly likable or relatable. I couldn't understand her affection for Aidan, whom I absolutely loathed, or her outrageous lack of basic reasoning and self-preservation. To be honest, I just saw her as dumb as rock. There I've said it. Hold your tomatoes! I eventually warmed up to her throughout the book, but my opinion was definitely justified by a lot of her actions and reactions. Her inner monologue was not that fascinating, either. Her back-story, tough, was quite griping and I enjoyed reading those snippets from the past. She did mature a bit, eventually. She even became quite brave, truth be told, in a primitive sort of way, but that's still better that nothing.

The love angle was just ridiculous. It was a very predictable & boring insta-love. I saw it coming from miles away and I would've appreciated at least a tiny bitsy element of surprise. I wish she'd been more weary of Gavriel. She was barely afraid of him and barely doubted anything he was saying. It wasn't due to their “magical connection”, but because of her inability to use her brain. Also that kiss was way too steamy for two people who just met each other. Let alone the other scene, with the blood sucking... Rolling my eyes

Gavriel, Gavriel. Why, oh why? Of all the Russian names, this is what was best for this story? I've just had it with these stupid names in YA books. It might as well have been Dracula instead. Right about now Edward sounds amazing to me. Other than his name, he didn't bother me too much. He was just the stereotypical blindingly handsome, brooding, yet sensitive bad boy. The kind you find in 90% of YA and romance books. I mean it's not all bad. At least he wasn't a misogynistic douche. He had that polite, back-in-the days gentleman-like way about him. He was a complete psychopath, but the redeemable kind. Sort of reminded me of Stephan, Damon and Klaus from Vampire Diaries (which is a guilty pleasure of mine). He's a combination of all three.

If I think about it that's why I ended up enjoying this book. After they set foot in the Coldtown I kept making connections with The Vampire Diaries episodes. Barely anything makes sense in that show, but for whatever reason, I find it entertaining. Tana was pretty much like Elena, when she was human. I hated her guts in beginning because she was always so impulsive and getting herself into trouble by ignoring thinking. I got used to her, eventually, and just amused myself watching her perfect the art of being annoying.

As for rest of the characters in this book, they either irritated me or I just did not care for them. I found it very unrealistic that most of them lacked almost any fear of vampires. Those creatures were so dangerous, yet people barely flinched. Which is completely unnatural. I hated Aidan because he was such a train wreck of a human being/newborn vampire. So sleazy and manipulative. I was hoping someone would put him out of his misery, but he lived to tell the tale. Raising my arms to the sky Same feelings about Midnight. And then there's Tana's little sister... So messed up at such a young age. So sad.

This book has been so hyped up in reading community that I expected it to be so much better. Unfortunately, it wasn't that good. Too many things bugged me about it. Nonetheless, the writing was pretty decent and the plot was mildly entertaining so I'm not too upset that I picked it up.

For those of you wondering, yes this is a vampire book. But it is by no means just a vampire book.

As I tend to do with books that I wholly adore, I blew through all 400+ pages in 48 hours. Right off the bat, I knew I was reading a fantastic book—I was gripped from the first page to the last and I loved every moment of it.

Granted, I'm not anti-paranormal or sick of vampires, but even if I was, I suspect I would have loved this book just as much. This isn't a girl-meets-super-sexy-vampire book, this is a book about survival and making difficult decisions to protect the people you love. This is a book with truly memorable and complicated characters and incredible twists. And as a bonus to some, it's a standalone novel.

I'm going to continue to recommend this book to anyone who will listen, because I loved it that much. It immediately jumped onto my favorite books list and I hope to see more vampire books that are just as compelling and ultimately, perfect.

The story kept me engaged enough, but docked a star because there really isn't any new territory explored here. The usual debates about are vampires monsters or do they still have some humanity; vamps as celebrities/romanticizing vamps; super ancient maybe-used-to-be-evil vamp redeemed by super good teen girl; yadda yadda yadda.

Also, I think the ending may have set up a sequel, but I can't be quite sure. The second to last paragraph give us a blog entry from someone named “MG,” and I can't recall being introduced to anyone in the book with those initials other than Midnight, but for many reasons this can't be Midnight's entry. The entry talks about filming a transformation that will be posted soon, but then we get no follow up. So what is the point of that chapter if the author isn't setting up a sequel?

I know that bitter and lonely 35-year-old men aren't really the target audience for Young Adult paranormal vampire fiction, but I thought I was really going to like this book. The concept seemed interesting, as it keeps a lot of traditional vampire story stuff, while adding some new stuff to create a pretty interesting version of a world where vampirism is a disease quarantined in cities called Coldtowns. I did really enjoy a lot of the vampire parts of the book. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into the parts about teenage girls making out with ancient vampire boys.

OK. Count me among those who are a bit burned out on vampires. But, I trust Holly Black, so I was excited to read this. I love her vampire worldbuilding and the obsession with vampires on reality television & blogs etc.

I liked the way the narrative occasionally interspersed with news stores/blog entries–personally, I would have been happy with even a few more blog entries.

The story is DARK. I mean, Holly Black does dark, so not too big of a surprise, but... just FYI. Dark. Dying. Torturing. Etc.

I assume there will be a sequel? I'll definitely read it, since this ending is so cliffhanging! And I especially want to see what happens with Tana and Gavriel? Like on one hand... I think I'll be disappointed if they get together, because Tana seems too smart for that... but on the other hand, the heart wants what it wants, and maybe it wants a glamorous, mentally unstable vampire. At least she's going into it eyes wide open.

Oh, and I thought it was cool that there was a transgender teen character and a bit of meta about how trans*people might fit into the world of vampires. Holla.
