The Children of the Sky

cum prima carte din serie a fost, după gustul meu, compusă dintr-o parte space opera de 2/5 și una first contact de 5+/5, faptul că aceasta este 100% doar cu partea de first contact m-a făcut s-o încep cu așteptări foarte mari.
Șiiiii.... am dat peste 700 de pagini de umplutură, care m-au plictisit considerabil; practic mi-a displăcut să citesc acest volum. Pe deasupra, dacă prima era cumva între public foarte tânăr, tânăr și matur, aceasta este trimisă direct spre țintă adolescentină, cu 90% din personaje (de ambele specii) adolescenți tâmpiți. Din care am fost și eu, dar nu mai sunt de vreo 2 decenii (deci nici în acest public). De altfel, dacă în prima m-a enervat foarte tare că unele personaje acționează orbește și tâmpește, fără să gândească sau să aibă îndoieli elementare, aici această situație este generalizată.
O mare dezamăgire. O carte cam de 5/10, dar sistemul idiot de notare al GR mă face să-i dau 1/5, fiindcă aici înseamnă ”Did not like it”. And i did not.
Off topic: v-am spus că urăsc sistemul de notare GR? Cărți de nota 6-7 după stilul nostru, le dau 2, că înseamnă ok. Cărți de 5-6, adică ok în logica noastră, le dau 1, că înseamnă ”did not like it”. De acum o să le dau și note românești, ca să se înțeleagă: aceasta e de 5 din 10 (are 1, dar se poate cu destule grade mai rău).

Overall, although I got something out of this book, it's a relatively disappointing book from a great author, and so far I've read it once only.

Good points: it's all about the world of the Tines, it's an exciting story, and it has a happy enough ending.

Bad points: there's quite a lot of unpleasantness all through it, and not a lot really happens from a broad perspective: some individuals suffer, some die, and the political situation changes, but the other parameters of the situation remain much the same at the end as at the beginning. Which is unusual for sf in general, and for a Vernor Vinge story in particular.

From my previous experience of them, I really liked the Tines, and I was keen to read more about them, so this partly satisfied that desire; but it's not the kind of story I wanted to read. And I'm not keen on the human story here either.

Sometimes even my favourite authors seem to have no idea of what it is that I really want to read. Tut. I'm tempted to give it only two stars, but I think I should read it again before deciding.

I'm somewhat torn on this, I enjoyed the book but the author seems to be doing a lot of foreshadowing that does not have a payoff. (I apologize for being vague, I'm trying not to give away spoilers).

I'm not sure if he's going to do another book or not, if he does and it explores some of these threads (and some of the ones in A Deepness in the Sky), it could raise my rating for the entire series. If not, and this is the end, then it's good but a little disappointing at the same time.
