You know those books you want to love but you just don't? Well that was this book for me.  I love the idea but the execution didn't do it for me. It was okay but I don't care enough about the characters or the world to continue the series
What I did like:

  • the overall plot. It's interesting and I loved when we learned new things to further the plot
  • The political aspect. This was honestly my favorite part of the book.

  • the characters were very flat.
  • The main character grew up in a world recovering from a war, raised by her grandfather who was a lead guy in winning the war, and went to school all her life to basically train to be in their military but still had no impulse control, no critical thinking skills, and could not get past her own anger to even cooperate with her friends?
  • There was minimal character development. In almost 500 pages the MC still had the same mindset she began with.
  • The world building was clunky and info dropped. It seemed like every bit a world building was over explained and dragged out. Anytime something new was introduced we either had long winded explanations of it or an inner monologue from the MC that was just as long winded and often switched tracks into something completely different halfway through.
