Stalingrad is perhaps the greatest human feat in history, few moments of defiance have meant so much. In Stalingrad the tide of the WWII changed, Hitler's efficient war machine was brought to a stop by the brave citizens of this city on the banks of the Volga... crossing that river would have given the Nazis a highway to incredible natural resources to conquer the World. The Soviets stood their ground in heroic fashion and gave lives like no other nation ever has... Grossmann is faithful to the Russian masters such as Dostoyevsky and Tolstoi, the level of detail, psychological analysis and social realism can be daunting for some readers and at times as a reader you want to shout “get on with the story” but nevertheless a masterpiece of the 20th Century
