I received this book through netgalley in exchange for a honest review
I was super excited for this book to come out and was oh so ready to read it. Quick;y found out, this book wasn't what I thought it would be.
This was not an enjoyable read for me. Truly, 2 star rating but, it was so well written and I see how others might enjoy it.... so, I'd hazard a 2.5 rating.
I think the book is well written. It is easy to read and get into the flow of things. There is a pull to be completely enthralled by the book but, personally, I wasn't pulled in.
The characters are interesting as well as the magic type. Reading about magic from Russia is not a usual thing so, reading it here was entertaining and different.
The kin were an interesting addition but, confusing. I don't understand them and it is never truly explained what they are just... kin. Can I have a name? Also, what a horrible existence for them... I'm surprised they haven't killed each other/themselves. Maksim is even worse off but, why he was that bad wasn't explained. The issue..yeah but, I still don't understand fully.
The plot... it is good-ish. There are intriguing moments but, the book is really slow and bland for me. I was constantly waiting for something to spark an interest in me.
The ending was pretty realistic in my book. The book ended but the story has not because, it is life. The issues in the book are ones that will happen again and the characters will have to make other decisions. In this case, I'd say death is the only answer... one that does pop up even in this book.
Did I like the book? Not really but, wasn't a complete waste of time.
Recommend it? Probably not.
