In this romantic version of the classic fairy tale, Snow White and Rose Red live on the edge of the forest that conceals the elusive border of Faerie. They know enough about Faerie lands and mortal magic to be concerned when they find two human sorcerers setting spells near the border. And when the kindly, intelligent black bear wanders into their cottage some months later, they realize the connection between his plight and the sorcery they saw in the forest.

This was a good retelling of a lesser known fairy tale. Set in Elizabethan England, the language can be difficult to follow. The story itself is interesting and has some good core pieces. I enjoyed the fact that the sisters built a relationship with the princes. It wasn't the insta-love that so many modern tales rely on. Still, I felt there could have been more character development. There weren't many characters, but there were enough for them to blend into one mushy indistinguishable pile. Characters came and went, and I never grew attached to any of them. Even the main characters that dominated the majority of the pages were lacking.
Overall it was still an enjoyable read and solid story. It's a good read, but takes some work to follow.
4.5 stars!
I loved this read! The dialogue was a bit hard to get used to and I didn't like that a whole lot, but it did fit with the setting of medieval times I suppose.
I love retellings, and this happens to be one of the only retellings of a favorite fairy tale of mine! Snow White and Rose Red is a very uncommon fairy tale, and this retelling justified it beautifully!!
A retelling of snow white and rose red set in Elizabethean set with Faerie and other mischief. Well written and a good read. Moves along without dragging but also not gripping in a way that you can't put it down (perfect for my needs at the moment).
Not at all like what Wrede is best known for (Enchanted Forest series or Celia and Kate series) but a good read as long as you don't expect that.
