The more of her work I read, the more Valente's facility with different narrative voices impresses me. This particular tale is a retelling of Snow White as a Western, with a generous helping of race and gender commentary, and somehow the whole thing just holds together flawlessly, avoiding feeling either predictable or contrived. Valente certainly knows from fairy tale magic: dark, bloody, always with a price to be paid. I'm still trying to decide how I feel about the ending, though.
