sign here by claudia lux is a debut novel about a guy who works in hell and makes deals with people to sell their souls to the devil, in exchange for something they want. the setting sounds interesting bc it seems like hell went corporate & every day sounds like a v inconvenient day at work. some parts allude to the tortures of eternal damnation and sometimes it’s briefly described, but the setting isn’t scary at all (unless jager & pens that don’t work frightens you). 

the harrisons have their typical rich white family drama so it wasn’t all that interesting to me, but the morally grey (i know, how morally grey can you be if you’re in hell) peyote trip was my favorite out of all the characters and i enjoyed his pov the most as he makes his way up the corporate hell ladder + tries to get these people to sell their souls away by signing a contract on his tablet (lol).the chapters are really short for each pov and we spend a lot of time back and forth diff settings and diff timelines so it a little suspenseful & keeps you engaged.

although i enjoyed this read, there are some inconsistencies that i won’t be mentioning bc *spoilers* and some loose ends + weird & creepy behaviors by a certain character that i wish were explained and addressed. i’m glad i slept on this bc when i finished this book last night the ending gave me that high that you get when you finish a book and think about the events that happen after the ending and the character’s future, but now that i’ve collected my thoughts a bit more, i feel like this just had too much going on and too many side stories that didn’t really feel cohesive in the end.

This was so freaking fun to read. It was a little dark but in such a light way that I wasn’t bothered or left in distress. I had such a great time seeing all these different perspectives not knowing how they were connected and slowly getting piece by piece bringing them all together! I don’t know if I could have guessed the ending at any point of this maybe if I was actively trying but just being along for the journey I didn’t see it coming. If this was made into a show or a movie I think it would do really well, with vibes of “what we do in the shadows” I would probably binge it ><

I would definitely recommend if the synopsis sounds interesting!!

Definitely thought this was a comedy... nope. Still a great read, but an exploration of trauma was not what I was expecting.

At first I didn't care for the family story but it got good in the end. I did enjoy more Peyote then the family. Happy I got to read this story. 

I LOVED THIS! What a unique concept. The end got a bit messy and she didn't wrap up the Harrisons' storyline very well, but I still loved it.

such an original plot, brilliant writing, this is top 5 of all time for me

Was a 4.5 but knocked it down to a solid 4. I think I'm a dumb for not fully understanding the ending but it seemed there was some loose ends. It was thrilling towards the end and kept me on my toes. Just wish it would've ended a different way?

4.5. There were a few clunky explanation bits about the world of Hell that I just suspended my disbelief about. That knocks half a star off. But I am happy to overlook that in light of this being a debut. But wow! What a plot. What a well coloured in world. I loved the short chapters. I was engrossed in both the Harrison family story line and the Hell story line. This author will be one to watch for sure!!

OK this was pure fun! Perfect for Spooktober if you want something darker yet also on the lighter side.

I was so close to dnfing this cause it wasn't what I was expecting, but it was so much better than if it had went the route I expected. The multiple POVs and multiple timelines intensified the twists and really enhanced the interconnectedness of the story.

This was just such an incredible story that tackled so many different themes and issues that I can't even narrow them down. There was just so much depth to this tale and it had a lot to say. Looking back, it felt like a love letter to life and all those looking for its meaning.

This took me a bit to get into as the dual stories are seemingly unrelated at first. The concept of super fascinating, but the middle but seemed to drag. But I'm also a dummy and missed some big clues in the lead up to the twist at the end so it took me by more of a surprise than it should have

I loved the beginning. It was so funny and smart and gave me The Good Place vibes. But I kept waiting the whole book for Peyote's path to cross with the Harrison family since we kept bouncing around reading multiple character POVs. Nothing really happened until the end, and even then it wasn't much. I didn't like Cal's side story about the farm. I think this book was too different and too smart for me because I really don't understand what happened. I'm so disappointed from how strong the beginning was!

I could quite literally not put this down. I mean, I read a 400-page book in two days!!! The first chapter suckered me in when I selected it for my Book of the Month club pick, causing me to forgo several other books that are also on Mount TBR in favor of this one I'd never heard of before, and it was the best decision ever. Sign Here was creepy and thriller-y but in a dryly comedic way; half of it takes place in hell, and the other half takes place at a family's summer lake house. I was completely immersed in the stories of our main character, a dude named Peyote Trip dealing with Hell Bureacracy making deals for other people's souls, and the seemingly regular family he keeps close tabs on, hoping to complete a set - making five deals within the same family. Secrets and violent shenanigans abound.

It was gripping, and I had fun.
