Yes... just yes.
This was easily one of the best books I've read this year and in all time. I'll just start off with my only complaints so I don't gush the entire time.
But I will gush a lot.
These are pretty quick- the pacing was a bit slow at times. But, in my opinion, it wasn't awful. The book never got to the point where it was boring. It just could have been sped up in some parts. And second, I just wish we'd seen more world-building. Not that we didn't get a ton in the book but... I wanted more. It seemed like such an interesting society and concept, and I just wanted to know as much as I possibly could about it.
Now. Onto why I adored this book so much.
Most importantly: Plot twists. Maybe it's just me, but I gaped- literally gaped, mind you, and made a disgusting hissing sound- several times in this book due to the plot twists. I didn't see any of them coming and it was so awesome. They were all written so beautifully, and just kept me even more engaged in the book. After all, I was wondering when I would be shocked again.
The characters were amazing. None of them were perfect. In fact, they were far from it. There was something to despise in each of the characters, which I felt was important since, deep down, they're all killers of some nature. And while Citra was great....
Rowan. I loved Rowan's chapters because he was a character I hated to love. He certainly wasn't good and yet... can I really say he was bad? His character evolved through the book as a result of his circumstances (that's all I'll say- read the book if you really wanna know why) and it was so fascinating to watch him “grow” and evolve.
In addition, the so-called villains were fantastic as well. Because, really, were they actually villains? It's hard to say, and it made it all the more intriguing to read about them.
The plot and story are unlike any other and I was engrossed in this book from the start to the finish. I never finished Shusterman's Unwind series because I lost interest in the books. I'd worried that that would be the case with this book as well, which is why I put it off for so long.
But boy was I wrong.
