On a distant Earth colony, an orphaned survivor of an alien invasion discovers that the greatest world-ending dangers aren't behind her. It's been eight years since an alien invasion drove a small surviving group of settlers to seek refuge in an underground shelter. Cut off from the rest of humanity, the ragtag band has maintained a narrowly functioning colony due to communal effort and salvage runs. Alex Archer has her own duties as a dog handler. While this off-world colony may be harsh, Ash, Alex's black shepherd raised to sense threats, makes living in it a little nicer. But the tenuous hide-and-seek with the monstrous species known as the Lankies is about to come to an end for Alex and her close-knit crew of soldiers, techs, and friends. When a salvage operation goes catastrophically wrong, the Lankies home in on the humans. With hopes of a rescue long faded, all Alex has left is will--and the fear that there's so much more to lose.

Interesting read though not as good as Kloos's Frontlines and Palladium Wars books IMHO.
This story is an offshoot from the Frontlines series. It has two very different parts. The first part is all about the MC and her fellow colonists fighting for survival on "Scorpio" a human colony world that has been overrun by Lankies. The second part, following a deus ex machina episode, is much less intense. It follows the MC as she tries to adjust to a new life. It is probably setting things up for the next book in this new series.
The publisher's cover text gives a good idea of what to expect in the first part.
3+ stars, but I cannot quite round it up.
This was such a nice surprise.
Never read a Marko Kloos story before, but after reading Scorpio, I'm definitely interested in more of Frontline's universe.
I would have loved to see more development in our main character, Alex. Ironically, it seems there is one too many times that I was having an out of body experience with her, which I know is a strange description, but I might be picky when it comes to heroines, because they are always the characters that really give heart to a kickass story and stick out for me. It seemed as if we truly don't see what truly motivates her, even with her devastating orphan backstory. Although, this doesn't drop the quality of this story, as the overall storyline is fleshed out and the world-building is there in great lengths. Everything compliments our MC in each passing chapter. Finishing this story just makes me excited to see more of Alex as we dove deeper into this new series.
Would happily recommend this book to anyone who loves Sanderson. Got massive Skyward vibes from this one!
