This book had a lot of hype that I feel was a bit unwarranted. The short form style of writing should be kept to a blog format.
I read it in a single sitting: very interesting and concise.
What I found most interesting is the authors' (37signals, the creators of Ruby of Rails and the company behind Basecamp) point of view, which is antithetic to many other books about running a business. Among other things, they value serving a niche of customers really well over making compromises to accommodate a bigger audience; they value organic, sustainable growth over explosive, VC-funded growth.
The book is very short. In audio form is like a long podcast. Having said that, it comprehensively outlines a minimalist philosophy about small businesses and small size enterprises. While, taken one by one, all these observations are also found in other sources, I have not found a single place where they are all integrated together like in this book.
The only real downside is that for some of the “guidance” no counter arguments are analyzed to show where the limits are and where the methods break. In the end this is in line with the spirit of the book, something quick and actionable, not an all-encompassing academic book on business.
A lot of obvious recommendations at first sight. But why then have you still not implemented them?
I'm never sure what to do with books that feel like a collection of blog posts. The endorsement by Seth Godin is appropriate, since it feels similar to his daily blog posts, just in your face and wrapped up in book form. The content itself is great. I personally just don't prefer this type of format since I feel like I can read the whole thing in 20 minutes, will have covered 15 categories, and won't remember any of it.
If you would like to read bite-size chunks of unconventional business advice, this would be a good book to purchase, set on your shelf and read a chapter every morning before starting your workday.
I really like that this book exists: a lot of its suggestions are the opposite of conventional knowledge around startups. If you follow Signal vs Noise, their blog, as I do, it's less worthwhile to buy the book. Many of the chapters are already shared as blog posts.
Some of the advice could be stronger if it thought harder about the opposing argument, rather than dismissing it as greedy or thoughtless.
Written by the founders of 37 Signals (of Basecamp and Ruby on Rails fame), this reads well as a manifesto for setting up and running a small business. However, it's very light on real-world examples, and so overall feels lacking in rigour. Also, while I have no quibbles with the content, there's very little here that's new/fresh/enlightening for me personally.
Leuk boek. Aanrader.
Bite-sized advice for the work-life, especially business-owners and managers. From the makers of Basecamp. Quick and easy read, that tells many truths you might already know, but might need to hear over and over again, in order to not forget to execute them.
It's easy to like a book that agrees with your own previously held ideas.
Very interesting view on the paradigm or working today. The way we work has been evolving and some of our preconceptions are too old to survive the test of time. Here are some fresh ideas which may disrupt the way you approach work all together. A great read!
Highly recommended if you have any authority at all to control how work is done at your job.

Short review: This is a great, very tightly written business book. It is not a “5 steps to a better...” book. It is a “be focused, make your own way, but learn from us along the way” book.
I have already bought one copy to give to a friend and will probably by another. The price is a little high at a regular book store ($22). But Amazon has the hardback for $12.
