It was a cute, fun, sexy, touching novel. Probably too idealist and optimist, but after reading the author's last note, I understand her need for escapism.
I read it because I've seen the trailer of its adaptation. Many changes from what I could see, but I still can't wait for the movie!
¿Puntos a favor?
i do think that of all three of casey mcquiston's books, rwrb is definitely their strongest work. i think overall the main characters were a lot more well fleshed out, making it easier for me to enjoy the book as a whole.
i did have a couple grievances with how alex's latinx heritage was handled. i don't think it was terrible, but i did feel that it was a bit surface level at times. i do wish mcquiston would have delved a bit further into that part of alex's identity.
that being said, i did actually really like alex and henry's relationship. i was bit skeptical at first because i was not expecting them to get together so early on in the book. however, their cute little email exchanges really won me over!
p.s.
i will note that, much like one last stop and i kissed shara wheeler , you do have to suspend your believe a little bit to believe everything that happens. but i promise it makes it a way more enjoyable read if you do!
Unfortunately I did feel that it was a bit slow at times and as a non-American I had some trouble following the politics but I actually didn't mind how dense it was, one complaint I do have is that I wish the ‘enemies' portion of the book lasted longer.
I loved Alex and I enjoyed his personality, I loved the relationships he had with his family and those around him and I liked how true to himself he was. I also loved Henry and his tortured life as a prince, he was a little flighty when it came to Alex but that was completely understandable. I loved his relationship with his sister also. Alex and Henry were great together and the banter between them was natural, their love for each other was very sweet and I enjoyed witnessing their relationship flourish.
History, huh?
WHY did it take me so long to finally read this book.. I have no idea. But apparently this is my 500th read book (at least here on Goodreads) and I feel like it's a perfect one for that milestone.
I loved it. I loved it from the first page, when I did not even know what to expect. I heard the book was good, but I was so surprised to see HOW GOOD IT IS. The characters are just loveable. You can't help falling in love with them while reading this book, they're so amazing and each is special in their own way.
My favorite character is definitely Alex. He is so funny and I loved reading about him and his thoughts, his fears and his dreams. Of course I love Henry just as much, but there's a part of me that just likes Alex a LITTLE bit more.
But THEM? ALEX AND HENRY together? That's just perfect. What an amazing couple, I loved following their story, watching them go from “enemies” to “lovers”. Their story is so beautiful, it made me cry so much, it made me laugh and it made me want to throw the book across the room and then it made me just want to hug these characters.
Love love love the book!!
Christ, I wish I could get my time back. 2/3rds of this book is boring and the other 1/3 soft porn.
i'll actually be serious with this review
loved the politics storyline but found the romance kinda meh? hard to describe and also it's been a few months since i finished it But yeah. also the british monarchy related inaccuracies made me want to tear my hair out but it was very fun to read and that's why it's getting four stars!
I adore this book so much. It's adorable and hilarious with a sprinkle of spice and it's perfect
Politiikan huipputaso on toisaalta mielenkiintoista vaihtelua maanläheisemmille tarinoille. Young adult -osastoa, kenties. Kirjan on suomentanut Johanna Auranheimo, jonka kädenjälki on sujuvaa.
After hearing so many glowing reviews of this book, I thought I was in for a real treat.
Welp, no. It was so stupid that I sped up the audiobook by 1.5x.
Did I know it was a romance and probably something of a modern-day fairy tale? Sure, so some suspension of disbelief and schmaltz is expected. The romance was okay and there were a few comic moments early on.
But, Texas going Democrat in 2020? Basically no security on the First Son of the US or Prince Henry? A Democratic Presidential candidate removing her son from her campaign team when trying to keep said son's relationship from the press?
Plus, the female characters, even those central to the story, were cardboard.
And, as left-wing as I am, the politics in the book were overdone and bashed you over the head.
For the record, books filled with text or email exchanges recreating email headers with time stamps is really boring. I'm sure this filer was why the book was over 400 pages and way too long.
There was a lull kinda in the middle so I docked a star for that but the last 4 chapters more than made up for it and my beginning dislike of Alex. 3 1/2 stars
This was an entertaining and quick read, but I did not enjoy it as much as everyone seems to enjoy and I honestly do not get the hype.
What I liked about the story:
- I liked the romance and how their relationship evolved through the call, texts, emails and secret encounters.
- The book has good supporting characters and friendship representation.
- The author was able to capture characters age accurately.
What I think it could have been done better:
- I hated Alex. He was self-absorbed, narcissistic, mean and sometimes a bit ignorant.
- The story is too focused on America. This could have been balanced by including both POV instead of a third person narrative on Alex side.
- British characters seem to be constructed based on stereotypes.
- America election campaigns seem to be about almost everything except politics, and this book represented that perfectly. Unfortunately, I don't particularly like to read about it as the real campaigns are, sometimes, already more than I can handle.
Overall, this is a nice summer read and I recommend it for YA and NA readers.
2023 reread before the movie: ended up dnfing again after about 4 chapters in. The writing is just not for me.2022: First of all, thank you to those who recommended the book! It's been quite a while since I picked up a romance book, so thank you for helping me start my romance journey haha!Okay now to the review..(;・∀・) 2.5 round up; I can't say I was fully engrossed.. I was already slightly disengaged during the first 50 pages, maybe even 20. Maybe because I don't read politics as much? But as I went on, I feel like the characters weren't necessarily loveable (Alex being my least favorite), there's excessive swearing I feel could have easily been replaced with other vocabularies to deliver the same message/tone. Why resort to swearing every page when you can replace it with more colorful vocabulary? I also think because the plot was so predictable, I tried to read as much as I could catch the more essential parts, and move on. I think I also didn't personally enjoy the author's writing style.. Argh. I'm going to give it another shot with [b:One Last Stop 54860443 One Last Stop Casey McQuiston https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1598019346l/54860443.SY75.jpg 71323146] that I'll pick up soon.
Was a bit worried this book would be a bit cliché and a little trashy. However, ended up loving it and the depth of the story and characters surprised me. There was a few unrealistic elements however overall it was an excellent read
I think this is a case of reading a good book at the wrong time. I just did not have the attention span for the lengthy chapters with everything else going on in my life right now. Would consider reading again to see if I will end up liking it more.
Moving, sexy, politically relevant - a true gem
It's hard to describe this book. It's modern with talk of social media, it's classic with literary references, it's historic with snippets of American and British history. But mostly, it's a great coming out and love story.
I don't have the words to properly describe how absolutely fucking fantastic this book is. It's perfect.
I started reading it at 8pm last night and stayed up until I finished it at 5am...and I'm re-reading it now. I came for the romance and stayed for the hilarity, amazing characters and shocking revelations about what it means to be an American, part of a legacy and different from the ‘traditional' idea of who you should be.
I don't think a book that's technically in the romance genre has ever had such a profound impact on me or helped me to see myself more clearly. It's absolute perfection.
