I borrowed this book from my lovely friend, Alex. I'd been meaning to read it for quite some time, and at the time, Queen of Shadows still had yet to come in.
I'm sorry, Alex, but I'm glad I didn't buy this book. I'm glad you did, though, because it's in excellent condition.
I loved the writing. Aveyard is a fine writer, and the words flow nicely.
I didn't say she was a fine author.
The book is so incredibly cliche. I just felt like I'd seen everything before.
Unique girl possessing magical abilities? Pretty sure I've seen this more than once.
An adorable younger sibling who is perfect until something tragic happens to them because of the main character? Ah, yes. We meet again, adorable younger sibling.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. It wouldn't have been so bad, but it just made the book so freaking predictable. I was shaking my head at every attempted plot twist, because I've seen every last one before.
I hated Mare. She's one of the most bland main characters I've ever encountered. She did everything she was told, and it was almost like watching a ten-year-old think they were being ‘rebellious' by cursing with their friends. Moreover, the stupid thing couldn't think for herself.
Join a rebellion? Must check with Maven.
Finds a list that's obviously meant to be kept secret? Must tell Maven.
I was disappointed, to say the least.
