I was a little hesitant to start this book because I haven't read any of the other Imperial Radch books, but I found that it stands pretty well on its own. I'm sure some of the references about what was going on in the wider universe probably have more meaning to people familiar with the series, but this book is still worth a read on its own.

It's a lovely exploration of family and identity, as well as history and what it means (the value of artifacts in terms of connecting people with their history as well as the possibility of having them subverted for political purposes was interesting to me as a museum professional). The characters are fun and Ingray is a great lead. It was fun to read about a relatively small moment, of little significance to a wider space opera setting, but so meaningful to the people caught up in it.
