I had tears in my eyes just before the end. They could have been tears of laughter, because the book was not only very exciting and well written, no, it was also very funny again and again. But in fact I had tears in my eyes because the fate of the main character was moving in a certain direction that I did not like. Our “hero”, Ryland Grace, didn't like that outcome either. But then again, it still turned out differently than expected. And that's how it was for the whole book, actually. It was peppered with minor and major twists and turns that kept me involved at all times. The humor was great and the main character was just perfectly written. Then there was this fantastic space adventure about the fate of mankind, I fevered every second. Not to forget the temporally and thematically well interspersed flashbacks with which Ryland found out more about himself and the mission, made this work round and perfect. For me, an absolute highlight that I will gladly read again.
Flew through this, it was exactly what I needed. Suggested for fans of Becky Chambers' Wayfarers series.
Andy Weir's “Project Hail Mary” - it's made every single best-of lists and a lot of non-sf best of 2021 lists from literary magazines - heck, it made Obama's best of 2021 list. Yes, I enjoyed it, it's “The Martian” Part 2 - and we know everyone liked that. But. That's also why I wouldn't put it at my personal top slot for 2021 releases - I felt like it was more of the same, it's The Martian but just add Friday to Robinson Crusoe - it's like Weir did his own fan fiction. But, that's why everyone likes it (he did reach in his 2nd novel, and everyone hated that one, so, I don't blame him for returning to form). And, face it, it's a heckva lot of fun - go ahead, I recommend it, you won't be disappointed, read it, and chances are, it'll be on your best list.
Wonderful, couldn't put it down once I started. I was a little wary about it after not liking Artemis, but it met my expectations and then some!
If you enjoyed The Martian, you'll appreciate this. I saw another review that said it reads like you're watching a movie, which is fairly accurate. Are there implausibly fantastical situations? Sure. The whole book is predicated on an implausibly fantastic situation, but it doesn't take away from just how much fun it is to read.
Let's talk about this book that is blowing up the science fiction world right now. I usually “like” sci-fi. Most of the time, it doesn't get past “like” because a lot of sci-fi doesn't handle characters well (out of the sci-fi I've read) and I am primarily a character reader.
However, Project Hail Mary is fantastic. It's wonderful. It's heart warming. It's fist pumping. Maybe its too soon after finishing, but it may be my favorite sci-fi book I've read.
My initial plan was to alternate between audio and ebook for this one, since I had both. But after chapter three or so, I just stuck with audio and I consider it the DEFINITIVE edition of this book. Seriously, even if you don't normally like audiobooks, I strongly suggest giving this a try on audio. There is a character whose dialogue is enhanced tenfold by the audio. Ray Porter did a phenomenal job here. I can't really discuss what the book is about without spoilers, but trust me that you don't see where it's heading, and it packs an emotional punch when it gets there.
This is a case where the hype was very much real. I recently re-read The Martian and while I love that book, I think Project Hail Mary is Weir's best work yet.
In the words of my favorite character- “Amaze, amaze, amaze!”
Tienduusd hartjes!
Verschillende keren echt luidop in lachen uitgebarsten.
Oh echt, lees dit boek! Het laat je voelen als een genie. Het laat je lachen en een beetje huilen. Het is spannend en ontroerend. Zo fenomenaal goed!
Much better than I was expecting! This novel is more similar to The Martian than Artemis, and I think that is a very good thing. Great humor, a fun story, and lots of fun problem solving (which was my favorite part of The Martian). Highly recommended!
So nearly 5 stars but it lacked the emotional urgency of The Martian so just missed out. I still loved the problem solving, mathematical and scientific MacGyver genre though.
Earth's sun is dying, and if a solution cannot be found, humanity will be close behind...
Ryland Grace wakes up in space, not knowing who he is, where he is, or why a computer keeps asking him for his name...
As his memories begin to return, Ryland realizes he is a part of Project Hail Mary and he is currently on a space ship to try and save all of humanity...
Can Ryland fully regain his memory and succeed in his mission? Or will Earth and it's inhabitants be left out in the cold ...
What a fantastic read!! I had a really hard time putting this down. It's corny. It's fun. It's imaginative and interesting. Even the chapters filled with scientific this and biology that had me hooked. I loved the back and forth timeline between Ryland's present and his past as the memories began to return. I especially love that Ryland is a Junior High School teacher. That was actually one of my favorite parts of this read.
I haven't read this author before and saw this all over Bookstagram. For once, a Booksta-made-me-do-it paid off. I love a good Sci-Fi and definitely recommend this one.
This one is really good!
Andy Weir has come back to his style of the Martian. This one is not only bigger in every way, but it also super satisfying and enjoyable.
The Hard-Sci-fi-ness of Martian is totally preserved here. The twists and turns in the story are great too!
If you are a fan of hard sci-fi novels, such as The Martian, Blake Crouch's novels like (Dark Matter and Recursion), you will love this one too!
I do like a nice First Encounter story. :) I'll admit I skipped some of the science pages, but eh, that's okay.
Andy Weir's Best Yet
As good as The Martian was, Project Hail Mary is even better. It's very much in a similar style as The Martian with a similar character and similar storyline, but it is in no way a rehash. It's an excellent story that holds your attention and reaches a satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoyed his previous work.
Great mix for a book:
Science that seems possible. Problem solving. Drama. Humor. Characters with character. Even aliens.
Feel-good space adventure with a lotta math n science which made the book a ton of fun. There was a bunch of cringey humor in here that didn't land but it still added to the atmosphere of the book and gave it character. Good stuff
“I was alone all along, but now I am truly alone. The sole living human within several light-years, at least.”
Wow. That was fascinating and highly addictive.⠀

To be honest I was reluctant to believe that Weir could rip five stars out of me. Why, question? Well, I rated “The Martian” just 3 and felt like I was the black sheep of the Goodreadsverse. Mainly because I thought Mark Watney was too smart to be true and because the level of detail was dull and overwhelming.
⠀
“Project Hail Mary” was everything I expected and more. The story is told through a series of flashback and present events. I never thought I would end up enjoying this back-and-forth (I mostly want my narrative to be linear!) but Weir managed to cohere the story masterfully. I was helpless like a bird following a trail of bread crumbs. I was connected, I was Ryland Grace. I frankly felt every possible feeling in the threshold and certainly didn't almost cried. IT IS THAT GOOD.⠀

Like me, you're probably a little skeptical on the lone scientist thing but hear me out and turn a blind eye a little because this is such a beautiful story. It's a tale of hope and survival and friendship. I don't know what else to say without spoiling it for you so just go ahead and experience this for yourself. There's a big chance you will put this story in the “unforgettable” corner of your mind.
I'm sad I'm done reading.
I've really enjoyed this book. It's somewhere between the Martian (which is the best) and Artemis. The plot was very surprising to me and I liked the little plot twists here and there. I'd like to see this made into a movie!
