I absolutely LOVE Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr.Norrell, as well as her Ladies of Grace Adieu, so when I heard she released a new book I was over the moon. Not to mention the synopsis sounded strange and amazing. Piranesi IS quite strange, but in the best way possible! I was hooked straight from the beginning as you are transported to this extraordinary and unusual world of statues and birds and tides. But there is a mystery to this world and the delight of the book is as much this bizarre world as it is uncovering the truth about it. It keeps you guessing and trying to figure out out while subtle clues are dropped here and there along the way. It felt in part like Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea in the atmosphere it conjures. You can smell, taste and visualize the world through Susanna Clarke's words. Although I didn't quite feel a huge emotional tie to the story (hence 4 stars, not 5), it was still a fantastic read and an amazing journey with unsuspecting and surprising twists and turns along the way.
