It is an epic portrait of Paris that leaps through centuries as it weaves the tales of families whose fates are forever entwined with the City of Lights. The multigenerational saga takes listeners on a journey through thousands of years of Parisian history, through intimate and vivid tales of characters both fictional and true, and with the sights, scents, and tastes of Paris come to life.

One sentence synopsis... A masterful historical novel following the triumphs and struggles of generations of Parisians - from 1261 to 1968. .
Read it if you like... travel. Reading about other places is the closest thing any of us are going to get to taking a trip these days and Rutherfurd brings to life the City of Lights. .
Further reading... I've read two of this other books - ‘London' and ‘New York' - and both are equally transporting, informative, and entertaining.
This book is a historical fiction piece that starts is the late 1800s with.thw building of the Eiffel Tower through WWII. There are also short stories interspersed throughout with members of the same family tree. It truly is a story of the City of Paris. If you have ever been there you could imagine the characters and where they were.
The stories very from the Gentry down to a prostitutes and people just trying to live their lives or wanting to change Paris itself. As Paris grows so do the issues involved with that growth.
If you enjoy historical fiction as told through normal everyday people or the City of Paris you will enjoy this book.
But be warned this book is 800 pages. It does take time a dedication to finish the book. At points it can be slow.
