Erin and Max are two transgender teens trying to get to California. Max is desperate to finally transition, and Erin is longing to understand why she’s on this trip to begin with. The last she spoke to Max was when he suddenly broke up with her two years ago.
But when they find themselves stranded in the middle of the woods in a small Kentucky town, they realize they have much bigger problems. The locals need a female sacrifice for the monster that lives in the woods—according to them, the sun won’t come up again until the monster eats a girl . . . and it only eats what it kills. Fighting back is futile; no one selected as the offering has ever survived the night.
When the two strangers show up, the locals believe they have the perfect candidate. The irony of the situation is almost too much to fathom.
The thing is, the locals don’t know who they just trapped as their sacrifice. They don’t know Erin’s and Max’s secrets, which could be a death sentence on a good day. And the monster that lives in their woods has never faced prey who have already fought so hard to live.

I'm having a hard time deciding what I want to say about this book. The book itself was okay. The cover is killer! The concept was really cool and had so much potential. It just fell flat for me. Erin was such a baddie, but Max? Max really made me contemplate putting this into a DNF pile. Erin and the story really kept me reading. Max chapters had me rolling my eyes. The big bads were flat and not very convincing. The cryptid? Ugh it could have been so fun! It had so much potential, but I fear it wasn't utilized properly. There was so much potential here and it just missed the mark. It wasn't horrible, but like Erin's aim...it wasn't perfect enough.

Thank you NetGalley for this ARC.
I got this ARC a bit back but held onto it for spooky season just to set the mood. It was a perfect intro to spooky season.
Normally I'm more of a paranormal horror person and not monsters or slashers. However this one was more a slasher/monster vibe but I still really enjoyed it because the story was so great. Honestly this is more a tale of friendship, growing up, and old wounds.
I loved the honest tale of Max and Erin so much. The author showed their flaws, their vulnerabilities, and their strengths all in this tale. I won't say much here because I think this is a tale you just need to read yourself.
Though I can't relate to Erin or Max's old wounds as their journey isn't mine, I loved getting to see through their eyes and learn from them. Truly, the worst monsters are human, and that's a fact I can 100% relate to.
