I read Redshirts on a whim, and loved it. After reading Old Man's War, I am convinced that I love John Scalzi. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. This was the Jan. pick for Sword and Laser. I would probably not have read it otherwise, but I am glad I did. I have to be honest: the book has been laying around since December on my giant TBR pile. I was put off by the idea of it, old people=space war. Yeah. By the end of the first chapter, I was hooked. I started it last night, and just finished. It's that good. I think my favorite things about Scalzi's writing is that it introduces mind blowing ideas in a language I understand and still maintains a great sense of humor. There are not as many laugh out loud moments in Old Man's War as in Redshirts, but that is forgivable considering the nature of the story. There are some truly unforgettable aliens in this book as well. Scalzi's imagination is great and mighty. Also, I loved the nod to his favorite writers: soldiers called Sagan and Gaiman. John Scalzi, I pump my fist in honor of your excellent words.
