This was on the list for the grade level I taught in NC. I continually promised myself that I would read it again after I started teaching. It is one of his shorter works, there is no reason I wouldn't be able to finish it in an evening.
Well, I finally picked it up in the middle of being homesick for my classroom this month.
I can't sing the praises of Steinbeck enough in this novel. It is an amazing look into the American Dream, the bond between humans, and human suffering.
If any of you are teachers that are covering this book, the movie starring John Malkovich and Gary Siniseis extremely accurate to the novel. And it helps bring to life the connections that some kids have a problem making with the novel.
Such a beautiful story.
I really don't know why I had to read [b:The Grapes of Wrath 4395 The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1309212810s/4395.jpg 2931549] in high school but not this one. If I had read this one first, I would have been more excited to read more Steinbeck. I suppose school is meant to have us read books that we will need help with and Grapes definitely requires more supervision than this.I listened to Of Mice and Men on playaway. It was masterfully narrated by Gary Sinise (always Lieutenant Dan to me) and I think I enjoyed it more because of his performance. Even so, the story itself is simple and entertaining. Readers can make quick work of it due to its brevity. Highly recommended.
Reread in 2023 - almost 20 years since I first read this, and I can see some problems with it now. Although keeping my original rating for posterity sake (haha)
Easy to see how this book became a classic. It deserves all the praise. Loved it!
Lenny and George are friends who travel together, looking for work during the Great Depression in America. George is world wise and street smart but Lenny is slow and naïve. George and Lenny have struggles finding work and Lenny, because of his limited intelligence, is always struggling to keep from jeopardizing the jobs the men find. Despite their struggles, George and Lenny have big dreams, dreams of getting their own place and living off the “fatta the land.”
Lenny and George find work on a ranch, but within hours of arriving, the men are worried about keeping their jobs. The owner's son is a small man who is always looking for a fight. In addition, the owner's son's wife is a flirt, inciting her husband's raging jealousy and anger. And it is not long before trouble comes.
A powerful story, with vivid characters and rich symbolism. One of my favorite reads of all time.
I do not like leaving negative reviews for books that I do not personally like an I have been having a hard to to effectively communicate my thoughts on this book.
So, i will just say this book does have an audience that will find this enjoyable. This book was not for me.
Didn't quite appreciate it when I read it as in school, but I still remember a relatively significant chunk of it, given the years that's passed by. That sort of puts in my list of really good books since it's so memorable. A classic tale about two brothers, one looking after the other, and you just know something tragic is going to happen in the end.
