Dark, edgy, gritty dystopian world where mankind has finally managed to annihilate their own world and turn it into a barren land. In what's left in the aftermath vampires rule as ruthless, brutal, unstoppable force. What's left of humanity is either corralled in slaughterhouses or in hiding spots in the abandoned cities as the last hope for resistance. If you are looking for romance, this isn't it. The plot is heavily exploring the topics of slavery, cannibalism, mind manipulation, grooming, torture, forced breeding, rape and everything sick and twisted that fantasy can find in the darkest recesses of human mind. If you are looking for world building morally grey of the greyest variety characters, strap in and prepare for a bumpy road. I had the feeling that my heart was bleeding while I was reading. Damn, there aren't many books where nothing bad is spared and left to the imagination. I will refrain of analysing the motives and psychology of the main characters - they are so complex and constantly changing, my head was spinning with everything happening. Definitely impatiently waiting the next books in the series. Bring in the Darkness, close the doors, keep quiet and pray to survive!
