A book that I loved, an absolute must read, and now a favorite of mine. It's a book that will live on my shelves forever and I would re-read in the future. I would pick up anything else by this author without question. This book is now one of my all-time favorites.
I love Norse Mythology, and I loved this book. I think one of the things that I liked about about it was the comedy, and I think that this is something that you do not normally get when reading mythology. What Neil Gaiman does is flesh out the characters to give the Gods more characterisation rather than them seem to be omnipresent beings. And besides that, what else can you say. It's Neil Gaiman! Nuff said!
DNF at 31%.
I think I have read enough to know that I will not enjoy the rest of this book.
Maybe this is something you can read as bed time stories if you are really into Norse Mythology and this is great for making you fall asleep?
Clear no for me. It managed to completely sniff out any interest I might have had in Norse Mythology.
Neil Gaiman does an amazing job of re-telling Norse mythology in a way only he would. where the world of mythology, fantasy and humor converge in such great storytelling. I couldn't put this book down.
“That's the joy of myths. The fun comes in telling them yourself—
something I warmly encourage you to do, you person reading this. Read the
stories in this book, then make them your own, and on some dark and icy
winter's evening, or on a summer night when the sun will not set, tell your
friends what happened when Thor's hammer was stolen, or how Odin
obtained the mead of poetry for the gods . . .”
Neil Gaiman
I have always liked mythology. I love readig and learning new stories. I expecially love the stories where Lokis cunning and smart are being shown.
It did not change my ifewievs tho. But the stories are good and I recemend them
Odin: “Boys, we have a problem”
Loki: “I guess I'll turn into an animal of some sort and fix it.”
Thor: “Me smash!”
That was it. It was great. 7.5/10
Loved this, was a little short but sometimes thats not a bad thing! The format of how the story was told was very entertaining.
I was born and raised in Sweden, so these stories are not new to me. Gaiman's version is well written, but doesn't really bring anything new to the table.
Neil Gaiman is a great storyteller and this is an amazing retelling of these timeless tales. I recommend the audiobook, read by the author himself.
Apart from everything else, the author's voice is just a treat for my ears )))
I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. Of course, some things seemed appalling to me, but such are all the myths. I wish I could understand better the underlying meanings, but at least I've learned to accept them.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find a character/god/giant I could like and root for. They kind of supposed to have vices and flows much like we do, but they could have at least some really good qualities as well.
It took me 2 years to get through this one, not for its size, but due to a lack of flow. Contrasting it with Mythos — similar subject matter —, Norse Mythology just... isn't interesting? The tone and discombobulated writing didn't work for me.
I read this book in an hour and a half whilst travelling home from Amsterdam. Because of the shorter chapters I flew through the book, I mean, most of these chapters/stories had around 15 pages.
The writing style was great, the stories were great. Overall, a great read :)
It's just your ordinary Norse mythology, retold by Neil Gaiman. Nothing special about that. Except, the Gaiman touch. That is something special.
What makes this amazing is the last chapter and the last sentences. Neil Gaiman always delivers.
He leaves me hopeful, filled with love and peace, and in tears. He makes me happy.
I loved this retelling! I always thought Norse myth seemed intimidating somehow, but this narrative was completely accessible and engaging. :)
An absolutely incredible retelling of Norse Myth. Coming into it, knowing a little about Ragnarock, made the work that much better. The way that Gaiman frames the stories, each building on each other to the natural conclusion of Norse Myth, is great. You can see each mistake the gods make, every mishap or unfortunate circumstance or bad decision, that leads them to ultimately “losing” when Ragnarock happens. Sometimes Gaiman tells you how this will change the coming events, like in the story of Gerd and Frey, and other times you can see it for yourself, like when Thor catches the World Serpent on a fishing line.
Gaiman connects all these stories of Norse Mythology as beautifully as Yggdrasil ties The Nine Realms together
Mi aspettavo un'antologia un po' più approfondita. Ma tutto sommato, da profana dell'argomento, mi è sembrata una buona introduzione alla mitologia norrena e una lettura al contempo leggera ed interessante.
Can't really rate a collection of short myths but norse mythology is always excellent and this book did such a good job painting the main players
