EDIT UPON SECOND READ - Okay, so I liked this book a helluva lot more upon my second reading. It is easier to fall into when you somewhat know what you're getting. (I completely forgot everything about this book other than the general ~feel~ so it was like reading a new book for me!) Will be diving right into the sequel next, as I am dying to know what happens with Darlington.

This was an odd book – not a BAD book, but an unusual one. It truly does not feel like a Leigh Bardugo book, but I THINK that's because all of her other books were set in the same verse. This one is not, this is an entirely new universe for her, a modern supernatural-style story. There's ghosts and golems and magic and tombs. A whole mess of things to get in over your head with.
I did not enjoy the first half of the book, but my love for Leigh Bardugo's writing was enough to make me push through. I'm glad I did. The pace of the plot really picks up steam the last 15% of the book, and really drove me forward into finishing the book.
I think my problem with the book is that I really, really disliked the main character until about 75% of the way into the book. If you don't like Alex right away – she DOES get better. Push through, you'll see.
