It's heartbreaking to think of what humans are capable of - the Holocaust being such a horrific example of this. I've read The Diary of Anne Frank and about the Holocaust from other sources, but never have I encountered the first-person perspective Elie Wiesel offers in this novel. There are no words to describe the sadness and despair I felt reading his words; what sorrow, pain, exhaustion and hunger he and the other prisoners experienced!
Everyone should read this book in effort to remember the past, remember what happens when people stand idly by and remember those who fell in death (spiritually, mentally, emotionally or physically) as a result of the Holocaust. Such horror and blatant disregard for the human condition! I finished this book with a heavy heart and a reminder that we live in a world not meant for us. A world where evil and brokenness abounds, but I know there is still goodness and God is still present.
