I've been looking for comfort reads lately, so I've taken to reading some older works by authors I already love. I have a few more Laird Hunts to locate, but this was excellent. He describes it best, “Penelope gone to war and Odysseus staying home.” (pg 196)Yup. Constance changes her name to Ash and goes off to fight for the Union in the Civil War. She has adventure after adventure. We meet other females disguised as soldiers, nurses with hearts of gold, and vets with a penchant for turning the glass from photo plates into greenhouses. It's magical and wonderful and horrific and borderline mythical. Is a” historical fiction fairy tale” a genre? It should be. This is the second title I have read by Hunt and while it is excellent, it is not perfect-not like his [b:In the House in the Dark of the Woods 38496725 In the House in the Dark of the Woods Laird Hunt https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1588007873l/38496725.SX50.jpg 60137496]
