This was not what I expected it to be. But I did enjoy it. I think I was expecting more autobiography, and this was a little less organized and chronological. I did appreciate her perspective on her own beauty (as a tool & problem) as well as the way she reached out to women of color. This makes me think again about how I teach this era.
Interesting and inspirational read. Steinem has lived a fascinating life, and she has many worthwhile tales to tell. It was interesting to read about the development of the women's movement from an insider's perspective.
I'm undecided on this one. Loved the beginning, with Steinem's memories of her parents, and the remainder of the book had interesting historical highlights. Overall, however, I felt like Steinem played this one a little safe. I couldn't figure out her intended audience - I learned a few things, but mostly confirmed my existing knowledge and didn't feel pushed to make change. In other words, this is a comfortable book for feminists but not likely to inspire much attention from, shall I say, non-believers.
Astonishing and utterly absorbing. It's been a true awakening. I've learnt more from this one book than a lifetime of textbooks.
This book was so wonderful! Reading Steinem's stories of the road were amazing, but it's also a story of her journey to intersectional feminism that captivated me the most. She credits most of what she's learned to her experiences on the road and from her experiences with people different from her, and how she worked with those people to advance the causes she cares about. This book is a must read for feminists, those who may be afraid to use that term to describe themselves, and those who want to learn more. Steinem will show you the way.
