A solid, slightly underwhelming, sometimes impressive, mostly meandering ending to the first trilogy.
Slightly uneven pacing that had me bored for some parts of the book. As usual the highs are pretty high. the lows arent neceserrily low but theyre noticeable. Second half of the book is DRAMATICALLY better than the first half, its actually quite remarkable.
What an ending to a wonderful trilogy. These three books have to be the best books I have read in such a long time. I will highly recommend them to anyone!
Pierce Brown is amazing as always. This book took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. It broke my heart, made my chest thrum with anticipation, adrenalin, sometimes anger, but also joy. The author and the audiobook narrator (Tim Gerard Reynolds) have once again caused me to sob multiple times during this book as they have done with the previous two. They must be commended for that. I recommend the audiobooks 1000%. I can't wait to dive into the next one to have my heart ripped out and repaired only for it to be ripped out again. As odd as it sounds... this is something I look forward to. My love for this series would not be the same without those occurrences.
“I will give Eo your love. I will make a house for you in the Vale of your fathers. It will be beside my own. Join me there when you die.”
“But I am no builder. So take your time. We will wait.”
This series was one of the best I've read in quite a while. So much action and excitement! The pace of the story was so quick that I could have kept reading from start to finish if I had the time. Definitely recommended it to friends and family. This series made my top list for sure.
Overall a great resolution to the series, in spite of my rating. While I really like Brown's writing and the plot overall, the ending didn't quite work for me. Not to say it was a bad idea at all, but the execution just didn't quite hit for me.
An amazing voice cast and bookend to this first trilogy in the series. I waited with breath abated for this next version to the graphic audio epic.
Contains spoilers
Gods, I thought this was a trilogy, I fear I might not have it in me to see this series to the end.
I don't like first person narratives, so reading these books is a little draining, and this frustrates when combined with Darrow's as a single figurehead who can do no wrong.
I'm here for the excellently battles and dystopian, and these are well executed.
For that reason, I was having a good time before the gambit with Cassius in the final act... it was fine after the reveal, but I ended up speeding thru the rest of the book after that. It's not that I was frustrated out of care for the charecters, this is not a series in which I get attached to the individuals, but the sheer naivety and reactions to Cassius fake-betrayal were infuriating on a narrative level.
I'd much rather have been in on the plan, as it would have made me abandon the book if I was quicker to mark as DNF. It's a potentially interesting (if a bit unbelievable) play, but Cassius's redemption didn't sell me and the seeping frustration soured an otherwise well-executed ending.
I guess it's on me to assume the series would end here, and I may come back to the series after a few months. but ugh, I going to need to detox from that ending, not just my normal break to get over the first person narration.
9.5/10
I listened to the audiobook for this and had like 7 or 8 hours left when I thought to myself, “This shit is already insane. It can't peak like this for 7 more hours?!”. And then it only got better and better.
An excellent end to a top sci-fi trilogy. There are fewer twists and turns than in Golden Son but they are no less impactful, and Brown's depiction of action is as pulsating as ever. The ending leaves room for more stories to be explored in this universe, and I cannot wait to start on the fourth book!
Me ha costado meses terminarlo, me alegro de haberlo conseguido. Aún así para mí estos libros siguen siendo DEMASIADO densos
Just when I thought that people can't possibly be betrayed this many times, the whole story comes around.
4.5 stars, would read again
This book was so emotionally difficult for me to read yet so worth pushing through to reach the conclusion. There are so many scenes that will live in my head forever. It was a non-stop testosterone-packed rollercoaster that starts with Darrow being tortured and kept in a box by the Jackal for a year and spins into a series of battles and incredibly hard choices that show how there are no clear-cut good guys and bad guys when it comes to war. Each choice makes you question how to balance ideals with the cost of making those ideals a reality.“How many mothers have prayed to see their sons, their daughters return from war only to realize the war has kept them, the war has poisoned them, and they'll never be the same?” There was so much emotion because these characters are unbelievably real. Over three books, you love them and know them deeply. I had to stop reading for a week after Ragnar died. They are imperfect and morally grey and packed with breathless courage and reckless stupidity, selflessness and greed. Pierce captures the worst and best of humanity in every character. Forever a Howler <3Ragnar's Death“I will give Eo your love. I will make a house for you in the Vale of your fathers. It will be besides my own...“Ragnar and Darrows' friendship was a symbol of hope and change. Ragnar himself became a good and inspiring man. This made his death extra heartbreaking, it felt like a loss of hope. But he died reunited with his sister. He died a free man and a hero to his people. He died with the message to his people that they could be more than war and violence. Roque's DeathI will never stop wishing that Roque could have been different. His death broke Darrow's heart because Darrow never let go of his friendship, even through torture and attempted murder. I struggled with this tendency at first, but I think it demonstrated Darrow's ability to see multiple viewpoints and his ability to love unconditionally. The Mob and The Hanging“My name is Sevo Au Barca, and I am a murderer. And what do we do to murderers?”For me, this is the most poignant scene of the book, I can't stop thinking about it. Darrow's uncle is murdered by the Jackal and it leads to a fracturing of the rebellion's forces as low colors begin killing golds on their own side of the war. Darrow and Sevro get there just as Cassius is to be executed by the mob. Sevro breaks to the front and claims Cassius as his property because Cassius murdered his father. He announces to the crowd that Cassius is a murderer, yelling “...and what do we do to murderers?” before dropping Cassius to hang as the mob cheers. Then he lists how many people he, their leader, has killed. The mob cheers again as he counts off how many golds and other colors he's killed. But they begin screaming when he repeats “...and what do we do to murderers?” before putting the rope around his own neck and jumping. WOW. The power of that repeated phrase and the way it broke through the mindlessness of mob mentality. I was so proud of Sevro in that moment. The Final StandThe way my heart stopped when I thought Sevro had been murdered by Cassius and they were defeated. This was such a powerful ending because it's often seen as a weakness that Darrow won't give up on his friends even when they betray him. When Cassius kills Sevro, you think that has caused his downfall. But then the twist - Cassius and Darrow reveal that they are working together and Sevro's alive. We see that Darrow's ability to keep loving his friends and show mercy is his strength in this rebellion.
If your heart beats like a drum and your legs a little wet, it's because the Reapers come to collect a little debt
I've heard a lot of people who didn't finish the book, because they were unhappy with how Brown continues to kill off main characters. To all those who didn't read it to the end, you missed out on the epic conclusion to this fantastic tale.
Wow. The end. I wonder where the next books can take this story? I'm sure it will be just as extraordinary!
AWESOME but personally not as good as golden son or red rising IN MY OPINION
RR = 10/10

Tremenda saga, tremendo libro.

Morning star is an epic. One of the best books I have ever read. Action-packed with an incredible story world and characters. Peirce Brown kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end! And this book my goodman is a masterpiece conclusion to the trilogy. This book might just be better than the first one. The outer rim battle is made for blockbuster movie or TV.
My favorite scene: Roque's deathMy favorite political moment: Roque-Darrow-Mustang-RaaBiggest surprise: Cassius's "Betrayal"Best battle of the entire trilogy: Poet v Helldiver
