Don‰ЫЄt come up behind me like that when I‰ЫЄm reading. Don‰ЫЄt use my kitchen knives. Don‰ЫЄt just stew things. Each believes the other should respect this frequently reiterated set of how-to instructions, but they cancel each other out: if Tig must respect my need to wallow mindlessly, free of bad news, before the first cup of coffee, shouldn‰ЫЄt I respect his need to spew out catastrophe so he himself will be rid of it?‰Ыќ

Franse re-read. Verhalenbundel waar de diverse verhalen een soort levensgeschiedenis van Nell lijken te beschrijven, maar ook weer niet helemaal – het wisselt tussen de ‘ik' en ‘Nell' vorm, en er wordt nergens expliciet gemaakt dat alle verhalen aan elkaar geknoopt zijn (en het laatste hoofdstuk lijkt dat toch vrij duidelijk niet te zijn).

Nadeel van een papieren boek zonder woordenboek in de buurt – toch wel wat Engelse woorden die prachtig klinken maar waar de betekenis dan maar geraden of gevoeld moet worden...

Mooie zinnen: [over een etentje waar een professor bij is] “Still, when Nell did find something to say, she didn't feel she had to sift through her words and pick only the short ones”, of [over een nog niet zindelijk lammetje] “She made it a diaper of a green plastic garbage bag, but that was worse than useless”. Of [over een stelletje verwildere katten die vogelresten voor de deur achterlaten]: “They knew they were supposed to pay rent, but they were confused about the details”
