Liked the world building, didn't so much care for the last quarter or so. And this is another book that just ends, instead of having an ending.
Updated rating. 1 star.
I wanted to like this book so much. I read it when I was still in high school and I'm pretty sure it's been like 5 years. And I wanted to like it so much that I tried to force myself to like it. But I have come to terms with the fact that I didn't. I didn't like this book at all. I thought it was boring. As the more experienced reader I am now I would have DNFed it now honestly. I just couldn't get into it. I wasn't excited to read the next one. It didn't impact me I forced myself to finish it and this one just wasn't for me. The idea was there I just didn't like any of the characters really and the love story made me feel weird and awkward.
This a strange, but riveting mystery adventure story is even more engaging with the pictures in the pages. When a boy finds out that finds out his grandfather's tall tales are true he goes to seek his grandfather's friends from his stories and finds himself in a time loop.
Summary: This eerie story centers on a seemingly-ordinary boy named Jake who discovers that he and a handful of other children who live in a secret house have some unique abilities and characteristics. As he gets to know these children and the story of how they are involved in his grandfather’s past, he uncovers a terrifying reality.
For some reason I didn't find this book as engaging as I had hoped, though I'm having trouble pinpointing why. Maybe I had trouble relating to the main character, whose most defining quality was being a teenage boy. And the peculiar children were really defined by their abilities more than anything. The plot picked up at the end and I enjoyed the ride... but not sure my heart is committed to the series. We'll see.
So good! I'm absolutely hooked :). when i look at the movie verse the book i honestly loved that the movie follows a similar flow.
When I first heard about this book, I heard people talking about it being creepy. Especially the photographs included. It wasn't really creepy in my opinion. Yes, the pictures are a tad weird, but that's it.
The story itself is written at a nice pace. Whilst reading it is quite obvious it's just a book leading up to the big conclusion, which will not be revealed at the end of this book since it's only the first installment in the series. Overall the pace was just fine, but it definitely was slowed down because of the photo's included. At some point I felt like the photo's weren't really adding anything important to the story anymore. I was getting annoyed by how many photo's there were.
I liked the writing style of Ransom Riggs. It's easy to follow and to read. The first half of the book is very descriptive and informative about the story of the grandfather and Miss Peregrine, so you get the hang of the story. Near the end the story really kicked off! It got exciting and it had a nice cliffhanger at the end. Thanks to this cliffhanger I decided to give three stars and I decided to continue with the series.
Overall, I liked the ending of the book the most. It was the most action packed and the most exciting.
I've been meaning to pull this series off my shelf for a while now. Thanks to book bingo I finally started it. I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on this one but I'm definitely on the positive side.
I was disappointed that it wasn't at all creepy (which I was expecting) but I did enjoy the mystery of the grandfather's death and finding of the peculiars. I enjoyed the photographs throughout as they are real, vintage photos. It brought to mind the Asylum series except THAT was super creepy
Like some, I initially watched the movie. I enjoyed it too.
So when I saw the book on sale, I told myself, “why not?”
It was a fine decision. There is so much more of this universe, and all of it is delighting.
i want all 1,300 people who shelved this as horror to send me their address so we can fight
i have never been so bored by a book. that's all i have the energy to say because this shit DRAINED ME.
I was expecting something flawless given all the accolades and it didn't live up to the hype. A good story premise but the pacing is uneven; the characterizations rather flat and I don't think the author really thought what it would be like to be a fully-grown adult in a child's body. The action sequence that marked the book's climax dragged on interminably and I was relieved when the book was finally over. I will not be reading the sequel but I shouldn't object to reading other efforts by Mr. Riggs especially if more assiduously edited than this one.
I did love the setting and the idea of the book, but I have a problem with the story structure. It's a recurring problem (imo) in YA books, and it's the feeling of the story only happening around the protagonist, as if life freezes where he doesn't exist, and only continues when he starts paying attention. I did enjoy the read, thus the 4/5 rating, but I'm not gripped enough to start the second book asap.
This is a fun book, but I can't recommend the audiobook version. The reader's ability to do English accents is distressingly, embarrassingly weak.
Aside from that, though, this is a really solid YA book. And it's pretty different from the movie.
We cling to our fairy tales until the price for believing them becomes too high.
Sometimes you just need to go through a door.
I'd always known I was strange. I never dreamed I was peculiar.
I liked it. It was a neat concept. But I have no desire to pursue the rest of the series.
Very good book. We're transported in this particular universe ! Hope the movie is as good as the book ! It's also a very beautiful book with all these pictures.
