Another good novella in the Penric and Desdemona series. LMB is one of the best.
In this chapter of Penric's life journey, finding himself and companions in a very delicate and desperate situation, Penric is forced to don the Mira persona from his demon Desdemona. Tense moments mixed with humor ensue. To say more would be spoilery; read and enjoy.
Grover Gardner's narration of the audio version is quite good.
Solid four stars.
This is a filler between two better stories, in which Penric and his companions continue their travels, their relationship with each other progresses erratically, and he learns some unexpected new skills from his demon.
It's not a bad story really, and it adds variety to the series, but somehow I seem to enjoy it less than the other Penric stories. I reread it mainly for completeness, because it's part of the series.
Its main function is to give Adelis, Nikys, and Penric a new base of operations outside Cedonia, although Penric at least doesn't plan to stay long.
Another entertaining chapter in the story of Pen and Des, though definitely not a standalone story.
It had me lauging out loud a couple of times, but what I truly enjoy in these stories is how relatable and “human” the characters are, demons and all. For example, I couldn't help rooting for general Chadro even though his endeavour was doomed from the start.
It was also interesting to find out more about some of the vastly different personalities of Desdemona, and I hope there will be many more tales of Pen & Des and their adventures.
