A wonderful story told in a loving, funny manner. Russel Lazega memorializes the life of his grandmother, Bubbie, from childhood in Belgium to the shores of the U.S. and life in NYC and Miami. In between, as a child running from Hitler's regime that took the family on a treacherous, long trek including days on foot to freedom. Bubbie follows in her mother's (who led the family out) footsteps in sheer guts, perseverance, resilience and courage. Lazega beautifully captures the essence of a Jewish immigrant woman of that generation in speech and manner. As the matriarch of an extended family, she is a force of nature. The author writes as if he was talking to you across a kitchen table and he shares his family with us with all its foibles, humor, crassness and love. I loved the book. I did receive this book as a free giveaway but had been wanting to read it for a while. It did not disappoint. I hope the author has plans for more!
This book made laugh on minute then cry the next, over and over. This so much reminded me of what it was like to deal with my grandfather who was difficult in his old age. He too told some amazing stories.
This is really well edited and flowed smoothly. It was sort of weird to bounce back and forth between present day conversations and stories from the past, but I quickly got used to it.
I won this on Librarything, I did not promise a review.
