Maelstrom

What if you did something horrible to save the world? Horrible in the sense of nuclear explosions that cause tsunamis, killing countless people and displacing others? Would you be able to live with yourself and the knowledge of those sacrifices you made, and of the lives you crushed for the greater good?

Worse: what if your plan didn't work?

It's a horrible, horrifying question, and it's at the heart of Maelstrom, which picks up right were Starfish (Watts' previous book) left off. As in the first book, Watts does an excellent job of blending the epic (the efforts of the powers that be to stop Lenie Clarke's Typhoid Maryesque spreading of unkillable contagion across North America) with the intensely personal (Lenie struggling to put her life back together).

The only problem with Maelstrom is that Watts paints a picture of humanity so bleak, so corrupt, that by the end you're actually cheering for the ßehemoth to spread, because clearly we have no future as a species. Balancing that, though, is the knowledge that this isn't the end of the series - there's still another book to go, and from here humanity has nowhere to go but up.

Okay, first things first. Akkoord dat het een leutigheidje is om de MacGuffin van dienst, een soort organisme / virus / gedoe dat in competitie komt met alle andere leven op aarde, een fancy naam te geven als βehemoth, niet met een b maar met een griekse beta, zoals in beta-versie en zo.

Akkoord. Maar twee dingen:

1. Een hoofdletter β is gewoon B, dus minstens in het begin van een zin zou er moeten Behemoth staan en niet βehemoth.

2. Een β is geen ß, nondedju. In dit boek was elke vermelding van het ding niet ‘βehemoth' maar wel ‘ßehemoth'. Dat ik dan steevast Eszett-emoth las. Slordig.

Grmpf. Enfin, bon, behalve dat... Vijf jaar na Starfish wordt Amerika geregeerd (o fnet niét geregeerd) door een psychopaat, nadat Lenie Clarke erin geslaagd is om zowat de hele wereld om zeep te helpen. Zij bevindt zich al vijf jaar lang onder water, ergens in het midden van de Atlantische Oceaan, met een resem collega-rifters die een kolonie elite omringen die naar de zeebodem gevlucht was.

Tot, overmijdelijk wellicht, de status quo ook daar doorbroken wordt, en Lenie Clarke eens te meer naar de oppervlakte trekt.

Ho-hum, eigenlijk. Ik vond er niet meteen zo enorm veel aan. Het was beter bij één boek gebleven; de enige reden dat ik het derde boek nog ga lezen is omdat ik het vierde boek, Blindsight, enorm zeer erg aangeraden ben. En boek 1-2-4 lezen is zo knullig, dan beter gewoon 1-2-3-4.
