I'm so confused. I literally spent like 10 minutes trying to make sure this was actually the first issue because it starts in the middle of a bunch of action with absolutely no explanation whatsoever? And then it's all over the place, jumpy, confusing, doesn't make any sense. Does not seem like a first volume. Does not seem like a complete story. I wanted to like this but I'm just left scratching my head instead.
Although more on the juvenile side (something that's never stopped me before from enjoying something), I found this first volume fun and enjoyable. A mix between ‘girl guides' type camp shenanigans and the supernatural, but in a fun, non-scary way, the main group of girls go from adventure to adventure using their wits, knowledge and skills to good effect along the way. It's light, but has a lot to say to young girls without being preachy. The artwork is quirky and suits the overall feel very well. It may not top my list of greats, but its worth a read.
Story
I picked up this series because it combines two things I love: camping/scouting and fantasy. I wasn't really sure where this series was going until now, it just sort of seemed to be a mash-up of sorts with no well defined direction.
That was fine by me though, and I've enjoyed the three previous trades enough to have picked up the first volume of the hardcover versions.
This volume was definitely a step up though. Some of the mysteries surrounding the camp where they are staying are starting to gain more definition, and I'm very intrigued!
This series continues to be a delight, and I'm looking forward to picking up the 5th volume as soon as I can get it from my library.
Artwork
The art is great as always, and I think this story works better as a graphic novel, than it would as a traditional one.
Me ha fastidiado un poco que no siga la trama y qué encima cambiará el estilo de dibujo -_-
Well, that was adorable. Found this via the excellently humorous and inventive Nimona webcomic, by the same artist (Noelle Stevenson). Love this stuff. For the first 12-13 years of my life, I wanted to be a cartoonist/animator. Now I can live vicariously through these great artists like Stevenson, Kate Beaton and Fiona Staples, and dreeeam of the funky, sci-fi, fempower graphic novels I'd also write, if I had the time and talent.
LOVE all the scrappy, punk, creative lady characters. LOVE the positive vibes of nature and can-do/DIY spirit. And LOVE the eccentric fantasy stuff (three-eyed wolves, etc). Highly recommended.
