Legacy of Kings

Legacy of Kings is fully-loaded teen fantasy that happens to have an historical personage in it but nobody (and I mean Nobody) in thier right mind would call this historical fiction. And given that it was billed as historical fiction, I find this Unforgivable which is a shame because as a YA romance/fantasy, this was a very entertaining read.

So. I have very mixed feelings for this book. The first half was basically an introduction to a multitude of characters, some of which are very unnecessary (Zo and Jacob) to the whole of the story. In fact, most of Jacob's storyline could have been replaced with just a random soldier doing his thing or whatever. He reminded much of another character whom I won't name due to some fangirls that might be very angry at me for that.
Zo's storyline was of a typical love-struck girl who was way over her head and it was quite pathetic. I wanted to see how her plot would line up with Alexander's but that didn't happen. Much of her plot was also unnecessary but I believe that her role will be important in the next installment.
Kat was one of my favorite characters as she was just pure amazing in all that she did. Her motivation was vengeance and she was close to achieving it. Plus she's smart to boot.
Cyn's story was quite conflicting. At times I was rooting for her and other times I wanted her to be caught in her web of lies. We'll have to see what becomes of her.
The main reason for the three stars is the pure amount of POV's. They just weren't needed to tell the story. Also, the romance felt very cheap and forced at some parts. Though, only one of the relationships has a certain allure and charm.
Both Heph and Alex had the most intriguing parts of the book, which is understandable since this book is based on Alex's teenage years. Not much can be said about this for it can be quite spoilery, but I will say this. Their friendship and what holds for them in the future is quite intriguing. I won't say that this is a book that I would recommend to everyone but this is a book for those Ancient Greek/Roman lovers. It's not quite high fantasy but it's up there.
Spoiler Side note: What did Kat allude to when she was talking about how Olympias caused Alex's injury as punishment?

I personally don't know much about Alexander the Great but I absolutely loved this book. If you love historical fiction mixed with fantasy then this is definitely a must read.
