Second in series featuring Constance Kopp, a woman ahead of the times, in the early 1900's. In this book she has become a deputy sheriff in a small NJ town. It doesn't go smoothly but she is stubborn and persistent and smart and manages to get her man (a prisoner who escaped from a hospital bed on her watch). I though the first book, Girl Waits with Gun, was a better read but both are enjoyable and enlightening about the times.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. After the disappointing Girl Waits With Gun I was pleasantly surprised to find that the sequel surpassed the original. The sense of place and time as well as the pacing are all much improved. Maybe I'm just getting to know the characters better after two books, but I felt that the author did a better job at giving them some depth. I am curious about where Stewart will take the relationship between Constance and the Sheriff in the next book, and hoping that it doesn't go down the cliched romance path. Also will Fleurette ever figure out the truth about her place in the family? See now, I'm hooked!
