A slow burn romance. A enjoyed reading this, but will say the way the one indigenous character is talked about and written is highly uncomfortable and honestly unneeded. He is “kooky” and annoying by telling people about the heritage of the land and how they have ruined a sacred place to his people. Everyone is all “oh that's just Sam again, the kooky indigenous beta” and no one takes him seriously. Absolutely horrible. TBH, if I hadn't enjoyed the first book so much I probably would have dnf'd this one just for poor Sam.
Then for a book which was author listed 3 times in her note is not paranormal the way everyone reacted to Katiya's mention of the ghost in her house including her own when she first meets the ghost is lackluster and dull. There are multiple ghosts, tunnels that open and close on their own (oh and let's thank the spirits for letting us out), and a few other details which aren't regular every day things and no one bats an eye. No one thinks she is hallucinating? No one is concerned about how people get oxygen when in closed off tunnels?
Then I had a problem with Chaingate. How does it exist? Is there no government oversight? They mention that this is all one country, so there has to be a government besides town mayors, therefore why is the West Coast so entrenched in violence, slavery, and holding cities hostage? Also, I'd love to know how exactly Kat escaped and no one else is able to.
All this to say, thinking about this book after the fact makes all these things come to light and I'm really wishing I hadn't sat down to write a review. I've dropped my rating from a 3.5 to a 2.5.
I did enjoy reading this book. It is light...ish because there is mention of all the trauma Kat and Reed endured, but it is a great escape novel when you want to turn your brain off. It's about healing... through manipulation and exposure... sigh yeah I need to stop thinking about this book. I'm ruining it for myself.
Honestly? Fit exactly what I was looking for and what I needed. I may read the next, but I think it'll really depend on how ick I still feel about... everything.
