Klara and the Sun

“During my very first days in the house, I foolishly thought Melania Housekeeper might be a person rather like Manager, and this led to a few misunderstandings.”

Na The Buried Giant weer een boek met een dystopisch tintje, zoals Never Let Me Go. Klara, een Artificial Friend, beschrijft haar leven, vanaf het moment dat ze in de winkel staat met Manager, en waar ze vervolgens gekoppeld wordt aan een meisje “met een rugzakje”.

“‘One never knows how to greet a guest like you. After all, are you a guest at all? Or do I treat you like a vacuum cleaner? I suppose I did as much just now. I'm sorry.'”

Langzaam krijg je steeds meer zicht op diverse drama's uit verleden en heden, waarbij de rationele blik van Klara steeds vaker een beetje ontspoort:

“The waterfall no longer took up so many boxes, and I watched children and their AFs passing easily from one box to another with barely any interruption.”

“She drank coffee, all the time looking at me, till I found the Mother's face filled six boxes by itself, her narrowed eyes recurring in three of them, each time at a different angle.”

Klara heeft zonnepanelen en door een toevallige gebeurtenis op straat die ze vanuit de winkel ziet, kan de zon wat haar betreft niet meer stuk, en ze vestigt haar hoop op de zon om waar nodig te helpen:

“It occurred to me this was the ideal time for the Sun to send his special help, and whenever his pattern in the bedroom altered suddenly, or when he burst out in the sky following an overcast spell, I'd watch with particular keenness. But though he continued unfailingly to send his normal nourishment, his special help didn't come.”

De spanningsboog die dat geeft is hartverscheurend en hoe het afloopt kwam toch een beetje onverwacht.

Als ik heel streng moet zijn een halve * er af omdat het op een-na-laatste hoofdstuk wat mij betreft niet zo nodig was, en ik Never Let Me Go uiteindelijk toch net iets beter vond, die is net wat grimmiger, en is de opbouw naar de ontknoping nog indrukwekkender.
