The biography of the politician from South Carolina traces his life from its beginnings through his service as the Vice President of the United States under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and as the Secretary of State in the lead up to the Civil War. With his peers Daniel Webster and Henry Clay, known collectively as the Great Triumvirate, he brokered many deals intended to preserve the Union.
