Ultimately, as a whole, I did not like the Green Bone Saga. I'm happy I read it, because it had been recommended to me so many times, but it just isn't for me. I had to force myself to get through this book. I contemplated DNFing, but realized I did want to know how it ended.

Through out all three books, I found myself bored. There were chapters of great, fast action, and then so, so many chapters where almost nothing happens. Jade Legacy was the most boring of all the books – a great deal of the “action” in this one was purely political in nature. If there's one thing that can make me check out while reading a book, it's political action.

Jade Legacy takes place over the course of thirty years. There's almost nothing that could be considered an overarching plot in this book. It's more slice-of-life than anything else. We see the Kauls and their children grow up, and grow into their own people. And like the other two Green Bone books, there are bits and pieces of action, with a whole lot of nothing happening in between. Who knew gangsters could be so boring?

I'm disappointed that this series wasn't more interesting to me. The whole concept, the “magic” system is incredibly unique and well done, I just wish there had been more to it. More action, less political drama. I wish I had liked the characters more – the only one I really, really liked was Anden. But that's perhaps because he's the most “good” of all the characters. Everyone else was various shades of grey, or just outright bad. Maybe that's why I didn't connect with these books? Who knows.

Two and a half stars, rounded up because of Goodreads.
