Jade Fire Gold

If you want a fantasy/romance read that dives into Chinese mythology and has shippable, fun characters to follow, this one's a good choice. It didn't necessarily blow my mind, but hey, it was a fun read and kept my attention from the beginning to the end.

Ik had verwacht dat ik dit echt mega goed zou vinden, maar ik moet toegeven dat ik hey niet geweldig vond... Ik had het echt een 5 sterren boek verwacht, maar helaas.
Het was wel een goed verhaal en een leuke connectie tussen Altan en Ahn. Wel was het soms lastig voor te stellen met de magic, maar dat is wel vaker met magic systems...

This book has the potential to be great but the pacing is off. Without hint of a sequel, it seems as if the story came to an abrupt halt after much of the story being dedicated to surface level interactions and running around. The conflict was resolved in a few pages and the rest of the story was the characters merely going from place to place without much depth. I am unsure of why the last chapter was written the way it was because it seems that the motivations for the characters just flipped out of nowhere. The epilogue is exciting and could be the beginning of an interesting sequel but if none is to be written, it is almost a waste to have it at all.

i can see why so many have dnf'd this book. most glaringly, there are issues with pacing & writing – writing is not bad, but there are lots of places where it's a miss. there's just too much in this book, and because of that there are a lot of holes as well. the story moves way too fast for anything to be acknowledged and extremely grievous wounds occur but the character is up and fighting two chapters later?? bro?

this definitely leans on the younger YA side for sure, so if you're up for an easy action-packed adventure that doesn't give you two seconds to breathe, this might be up your alley. me? not so much...

I remember around June 2021, I had stumbled upon the title “JADE FIRE GOLD” by June CL Tan and I was intrigued when reading the caption because the book was pitched as “What if Katara was the Dark Avatar and Zuko had to hunt her down?”.
I had grown up watching Avatar: The Last Airbender and always felt very close to Katara's character (very much the rational mom friend over here), so the fact that this pitch existed, I got super excited.
I followed the author on Instagram and slowly became friends with her! I constantly hyped up the book and when I bought myself (on pub day) a regular copy from Indigo (I have not received my signed copy. Yet) I even managed to convince a friend to buy it as well (Shout out to Matthew who puts up with my book nerd self haha). I didn't get the ARC (still kinda salty about THAT but it's okay) but I was still incredibly excited about the book. June shared snippets of quotes and of course the character art! It was amazing. I really loved the queer representation and the characters were just so amazing.

This book was so, so good and I cannot stress it enough. I really loved how much Ahn cared for her grandmother because it very much reminded me of me and my grandmothers who I care for very much (despite them being very, very far away from me). I really loved Altan's character and he reminded me very much of Zuko (kudos to the author haha). My favourite character was probably Linxi because she very much reminds me of me (again, very much mom friend vibes. I have been told I am literally the mom friend haha) and Linxi and Tang Wei were very, very adorable (including Linxi slightly over-exaggerating her and Altan's adventures which was very much a mood). I enjoyed the characters of Lieye and Tai Shun but frankly wished their relationship was explored a bit more (to be fair, with a dual POV, it's difficult to completely flesh out every single character which I understand but hopefully we'll get more of these two in the future! I am looking at you June!)

I really loved the world-building as well. The plot twists were there and I did not see them coming. It might seem that this book has 0 flaws but I don't think there is such a thing as a flawless book but, that being said, it is very evident that the author very much put her heart and soul into this book (not saying that every writer doesn't but in some books, it is very much more obvious than others that the books mean a lot to said author) and a debut book is always very, very special. Additionally, I really loved this book and my one true criticism is that I would have liked much more of Lieye and Tai Shun. I love all the characters very much and the world that June has created is astonishing. Perhaps it will be a great movie one day (given that it's not screwed up haha).

This was truly the first book I have ever pre-ordered. I usually take the book from the library and read it before deciding to buy it but I had become very good friends with the author and I figured I would pre-order it. I usually went to the bookstore on the day of the pub date or a few days after because I wasn't on Instagram when I first really started getting into books and had grown into this habit. I figured that since I am older, I have the chance and money (most of the time) to pre-order once in a while, I will, to give extra support to my favourite authors! I pre-ordered a signed and personalized copy that should get to me very, very soon and it comes with the pre-order swag which I am incredibly excited about.

When I first heard of this book, I became interested because the author said it had Zutara from ATLA vibes as well wuxia/xianxia themes along with Chinese mythology inspiration. That was enough to add it to my tbr and I was delighted when I got the chance to participate in this blog tour.

So, I can't actually count myself among the fans of ATLA because I never did finish it. But I know enough about the story and the characters, so any book with those vibes was gonna attract me. And I may have realized that I'm not that fond of xianxia dramas in general, but I definitely wanted to read books in the genre. However, I personally found this to be a bit more different. Yes, the xianxia elements are present along with elemental magic, but what surprised me was that this book was mostly a Chinese palace drama in book form. It has quite a few of the staple tropes - Royals conspiring to kill each other for the throne, puppet emperor controlled by other powerful people in the court, children planning years long revenge for their parent's deaths and long lost parents and children being reunited. I could probably find more tropes if I looked for them, but all this was enough to make me feel delighted that I was reading this book. It was the double familiarity of a YA fantasy with the chosen one trope alongwith all the palace drama elements that made me very comfortable as soon as I picked it up and enjoy it throughout. The writing is great, with lovely evocative prose, lots of yearning, steady but not fast pacing and some tense moments peppered all through the story.

Ahn and Altan both are not very unique YA protagonists but we still come to like them pretty quickly. Ahn is a sweet girl who just wants her Ama to be safe and maybe find some respite from the poverty they are stuck with in their village in the desert. She never expects that she has a past and a destiny, one that could make or break her country and people. I thought the author depicted well her conflicts about her monstrous power and whether she should use it, whether she can leave it all behind or does she have a responsibility due to her power. While finding answers to her questions, she grows from an innocent girl to someone who understands the big picture and what sacrifices might be required for the greater good.

Altan on the other hand knows what he wants - revenge. He may not say it out loud, but he also wants his place as the rightful heir to the throne. And he is ready to sacrifice anything for his endeavor. But as the story goes on, he comes to realize - rather dangerously - that there are many things and people he actually isn't ready to sacrifice or hurt, and how getting his revenge will not reduce his grief over losing his parents.

In a way, both of them are a perfect complement to each other, considering themselves as monsters due to their decisions or actions, but slowly realizing that they understand and see each other perfectly, for the flawed people they are trying to do their best in critical circumstances. Their romance isn't exactly a slow burn but I definitely think it could have been executed a bit differently, to make their feelings for each other more convincing. It was actually hard to understand why they fell in love despite me as a reader knowing that they would be good together.

The side characters in this book are also quite memorable, even if not everyone gets enough page time. Tai Shun is not the image he projects and I found him to be such a lovely boy. Linxi is a good friend and I loved her interactions with Ahn, but her squealing about her girlfriend was the best. Feiye was a mystery to me for the most part but he really shined at important moments. The villain probably was a slight disappointment because he is very stereotypically bad but I didn't bother much about him. But the one who steals the show is Tang Wei, who is a badass assassin with a biting sense of humor and her banter with Altan was the most fun part of the story. And everytime she called him a stubborn water buffalo, I was immediately reminded of Lin Shu and Fei Liu calling Jingyan “shuǐniú” in Nirvana in Fire, and it just made me more happy.

In the end, I had a lot of fun reading this book. It has interesting characters, a cool history of the world as well as magic, and lots of fun dialogue. I was also extra glad that this was a standalone because I'm getting tired of waiting for sequels, but I had my eyes wide while reading the last scene because it's the perfect segue for a sequel if the author ever wants to write one. And if you are a YA fantasy reader who also enjoys Chinese palace dramas like me, don't miss this one - I have a feeling you'll really find this worth the read.
