We read this for Chanukkah 2022. I liked it. Trina Schyman's illustrations are wonderful, the story was lovely, based heavily on old Jewish and Slavic tales. It was funny and also lovely, ending with Chanukkah candles in all the windows... :-) Made me happy. :-)
When a town is overrun by goblins, Hershel is brave enough to stand up to them. These goblins hate Hanukkah and are tricked by traditions and Hanukkah celebrations each night. By the end Hershel must find a way to have the goblin king himself light the candles. Hershel teases the king and says it is too dark to see who he really is, one by one the candles light and the horrible presence of the king is coming to light. Is Hershel brave enough to keep it up the charade? Or will the goblin king catch on?
The illustrations are really unique, the goblins are comedic and gross, and most importantly this tale hits that sweet spot of creepy/winter holiday tale. It has a similar vibe to Christmas carol and based off the authors notes in the back that was the intention.
